In reply to the OP, I have given up because I am too ill to stand up and fight. Going into activism will make my mental health worse. I had so many panic attacks over Trump’s victory. I already wrote to many disability charities, but they have yet to reply to me.

I feel that my only choices are emigration or suicide.

I think you could argue the GOP winning the presidential election with a minority of the votes from the people strains the whole "democracy" bit a little.

Democracy and Republic are two different mix our nation should be a Republic also if its a democracy then that means if enough of those rioters protest because enough people want to they could over throw Trump D:

If you want to leave the US, it's your choice. It's an individual's decision.
I understand that many feel the need to help their country and to make it better. This is because many people love America, even though it isn't perfect, it's their country. Fact is, the US improved a lot since its independence. It's been the world's richest country and still is a superpower. But the world improved a lot too. The US is slowly falling behind in many country rankings, but not because it's getting worse in the US, but because the rest of the world is improving faster.

The US has its own culture and if you think you can change America, you can! The US is a democracy. But it's a democracy and while you may have liberal views that you know that will improve America and the world, others or the majority might not have those views and values. It's cultural.
If you don't like your country's culture, system and values, but adore another culture, like the Aussie, German, New Zealander, French or Québecois culture and if you know that life there is better, freer and more just. Just move to that place.
It's your life, do you want to enjoy being rich, free and having fun on an Aussie beach or living healthy and happy in the Netherlands? Or would you rather live with your people, who believe that global warming isn't real, having more guns is good, not being a member of an fraternity is immoral and Fox News provide excellent unbiased news?

Well good luck with that mate, meanwhile in Zürich, life's sweet.

Not only is that interpretation of those concepts completely inaccurate and wrong, that also has nothing to do with the Democrats and Republicans in American politics.

The Althing Confederacy wrote:-Snip-

... So... you decided to copy and paste my post, and then reply to each of my points, instead of the logical route and either cutting out your original part or adding a spoiler tag. Really?

Anyway, now that I have to work of a second tab...
1. No, but you claimed that people should stay and try to fix the system, and that leaving would be cowardice. Even though there are multiple people, who, under the Trump-Pence Presidency, would be much worse off of even in danger from their own government. Trump is inept when it comes to politics (Especially economics and international relations), and Pence is an evil prick, who has a terrible track record when it comes to gay rights and women's rights. Also, how is trying to get out of a shitty situation cowardice? Tons of people already leave the US due to the fact that there are better places to live elsewhere.

2. No, I focused on the fact that you stated that Canada can be cold, even though there are colder places elsewhere. But fine, if you want to complain about taxes and living costs, at least your taxes goes to something that's useful to the public (Like Universal Healthcare), unlike in the US, where about 48% of taxpayer money goes to the military, which also leeches funds from basically every public service ran by the government. Did you know the US spends about 3x's as much on it's military than China, the second highest military spender in the world? Now, onto cost of living, as stated before, that's a miniscule price to pay.

3. No, false. Due to Canada's low population (34 mil. compared to the US's 320 mil.) your country is facing an employment shortage, it simply doesn't have enough of a population for the amount of people needed to fill the jobs. As stated before, taking a quick look at jobs offered in the Vancouver Metro Area, there are tons of jobs available to just Canadian Citizens, and that number gets even higher when you include jobs accepting international workers.

4. Ok, you do realize most US celebrities own multiple homes in multiple countries, and that they can easily get a home in Canada and still work in the US? Hence, that jab was rather unneeded.

5A. Refer to point #2. Though, if you want first hand experience, come to the US, injure yourself in such a way that you require hospital treatment, and enjoy paying off a $25,000-$100,000 hospital bill. (This is if you don't have private insurance or ACA coverage, which a large amount of the population doesn't have)
5B. Depends.
5C. Yeah no, Canada has a 34 mil. population, while the GLA Rea only has 18 mil. Even then, you have a lower crime rate than the GLA Area.
5D. ... Why'd you separate Europe and Sweden? Anyway, yes, unless you're willing to deny the fact that most European countries have the highest standards of living in the world, with the people being the most well off in the world. Minus the Migrant Crisis (Which is something that needed to be dealt with a lot sooner than is was), I don't see a problem.
5E. 56k motem, Uno Dicycle (These things look really fucking fun), CADPAT (A form of computer generated military camouflage, which became the basis of the US' version, MARPAT). So, while I admit, Canada's not as invention crazy as it used to be, it's still created some rather interesting things over the past 30 years.

False, there were multiple protests and smaller riots cause by Republicans a little over a month after Obama took office. (The Tea Party Protests)

Also, I'd like to point out that the riot in Portland was caused by one of the local anarchy groups, not the protesters. The PPD was very clear on that.

I wouldn't fault people for leaving the US if they thought that, given the current political climate, that was the best course of action for them.

I agree with you.

That said those who said they were going to leave if trump won, would be legally be forced out at gunpoint.

Their immigration laws are actually quite stringent and you need to have real qualifications to be accepted most of the time.

Hmm. Maybe just write off the people who said they'd move pre-Obama, because it'd be hard to find records of them saying so from the days before people posted their every thought to Twitter. Then when Kanye wins in 2020 you'll be through the backlog in time to boot out all the people who say they'll move if he wins.

My honest opinion is that the US is beyond salvaging. The GOP have already shown that they will stop at nothing to prevent "the wrong kinds of people" voting, under the pretext of combating virtually non-existent "voter fraud". Between that and their lock on the white vote, they're in charge, basically for the next generation - maybe two.

And with a generation of GOP rule, I can guarantee that:

- The EPA will be gone;
- Most public services and programs will effectively cease to exist (Ryan's already talking about voucherizing Medicare);
- Any hope for racial equality or integration will be as dead as last Christmas' roast chicken; and
- The Supreme Court will be so slanted toward the Right as to make James MacReynolds blush.

It'll make the Gilded Age look like a workers' paradise.
Fuck it all. Let the world burn - there's no way roaches could do a worse job of being decent than we have.

Frankly, anyone who's actually considering moving to Canada probably hasn't planned it out all too well.

We have VERY stringent immigration policies, even for Americans. The process typically takes a few years, if you're lucky.
