How does gay marriage undermine straight marriage?

I've often heard it said, or suggested, that allowing gay marriage would undermine straight marriage. I've also heard this made fun of, but not in any way that seems to suggest what this actually means. The jokes usually say something along the line of "Yes, because I wouldn't have married my wife if I knew I could marry a guy." Which, I hope, is a misrepresentation of the actual argument. The idea that straight marriages would crumble seems too silly for me to feel like I wouldn't be insulting the opposing argument, so could someone clarify this for me? And please, no "It's because they're stupid" responses, as I'd really like to know what the thinking is.

I'm specifically trying not to assume that it's just a rhetorical tactic before I've heard it described, so I'm not really interested in hearing that. After all, I can come to that conclusion with out any thought.
