From what little I have read the wall will extend pretty far underground and be well guarded, so if we assume it gets built completely, it could stop a reasonable amount of people. Then again, someone told me today that the majority of illegal immigrants from Mexico come by plane. Haven't had time to verify that, though.
I seem to remember Trump saying he'd put a better immigration system in place for the Mexicans. If he does this successfully, it could decrease illegal immigration in the long term.
It seems some here think that the bulk of those 11 million illegals are Mexicans. Only 5 million are Mexicans. It use to be 6.4 million but illegal Mexican immigration has been going down since 2009. Since 2013 Chinese illegal immigration a year is said to be higher then Mexican illegal immigration. A wall on the Mexican border will not keep the Chinese out even thought some use Mexico to cross into the US. Most Chinese can overstay there tourist Visa to the US. They can also travel to Canada and cross to the US. Not much in the way of barriers on the US-Canadian border.
Chinese, South Koreans, and Indians among the fastest-growing segments of undocumented immigrants

When it comes to the Philippines, when they were a US territory they started migrating to the US which caused some Western states to pass anti-Filipino laws. When the Philippines was made a commonwealth, US politicians worring over the growing Filipino population and the political effect it would have on the US made sure only 50 Filipinos a year could migrate to the US. They did not put a limit on US migration to the Philippines.
