He does kind of have a point. In the Islamic world something of the same thing happened with the Neoplatonists, leading to Al Ghazali famously formally rebuking them in several works such as the Incoherence of Philosophers.

If in the High Middle Age philosophers were doing the same thing as the Neoplatonists and giving metaphysical explanations for their desires and some would say questionable practices. And also reaching certain philosophical positions about the Qur'an that some more vigilant Mystics such as Al Ghazali found disturbing, I do understand.

Although I don't entirely agree with him.

Well physical fitness will still be a thing, of course. Not to mention you can do what you wish to do in an ideal automated society. You can be an artisan, engage in phsyical activities that promote one's well being, etc. Not to mention limitless time to contemplate on faith and spirituality.

Except that's the very nature of the system. So al Ghazali still played along by rebuking them. It cares not of what is, but can be.

Labeling such as modernist is stretching the term modernist is rather meaningless imho.
