The Enlightenment was the single greatest thing to happen to this earth. Before that we were living in thatch houses, lynching our neighbors for being damn witches.

Well yeah, the next stage of general development in society is bound to be better than the last.

The Enlightenment was one of the stupidest movements in human history founded entirely on the propagation of superstition and ignorance. Anyone who associates it with 'rationalism' or 'science' and thinks it remotely atheistic is not to be trusted.

The Enlightenment drastically sped up scientific progress so you can live the life you have today, rather than being a fucking always-hungry peasant in some fiefdom.

Oh come now. Even as a fan of the Enlightenment, pre-enlightenment society wasn't THAT broken. It was pretty broken, but for the most part they managed to feed themselves in most cases.

We're at the age in which Liberalism has infected virtually every inch of land in the political landscape, at least to some effect. The old times of oppressive absolute Monarchs ruling over feudal lands is over. What we have now are liberal bourgeois democracies, authoritarian bourgeois states, and the possibility of new age, post-Enlightenment forms of oppression like Fascism.

because belief in natural rights and equality are essential to 'scientific progress'.

Scientific progress was already happening and had been happening for some time in Europe, it was the science which enabled the bollocks of the Enlightenment, not the other way around.

Indeed you could go reasonably far arguing the Enlightenment was a reactionary backlash to said progress.

I'll admit I was using hyperbole, a common tactic in order to place heavy emphasis on a point. That point being that those that want to reverse the Enlightenment are both ignorant of what it has done for them, and ignorant that it's already too late. Liberalism is simply established, all we can do is move on from it, we can't back peddle to absolute monarchies again.

If people want to content themselves with foolish things like kings and divine rights and feudalism, then so be it. It does not make them any more scientific than the actual established scientific method, which has it's roots of concept dating all the way back to the Enlightenment.

The scientific method was pioneered by Francis Bacon based on Machiavelli's political philosophy.

In other words, the antithesis of everything "The Enlightenment" stood for.

Ask those still around of the ~110,000 people locked up in 1942 who had done nothing wrong just how far rights got them.
