We're basically only trading out one of the best orators we've had for someone who knows the halls of power intimately. In two years we might find ourselves thinking of her as the 'get shit done' president.

That's exactly what I expect, as I've said in the past.

Best case for Pence he tells everyone that he did the best he could and soldiered despite the candidate he was stuck with and tries in 2020. Best case for the nation his career is history.

I suspect the latter, but it all depends on how the GOP handles today's results. If Trump wins all the good for Pence, if he loses who knows how well the party will still be functioning.
