I think there can always be a balance to be found, between the Enlightenment ideals and the Church. We don't need to kill one to preserve the other. Sure, many Enlightenment leaders were not fond of the Church, that doesn't necessarily mean the movement itself is awful, or that we have to go by the Enlightenment leaders' thoughts on the Church.
