In a nutshell, it is because Russia is one of the few countries which is militarily powerful enough to rival the US, and many Americans don't take too kindly to Russia getting in the way all the time on one or more international issues. In some respects, the foreign policies of the US and Russia are diametrically opposed. China in contrast- is perceived to mostly be out of the way or neutral, despite successfully waging economic warfare against the US. The cold war mentality of Russia being a threat by default, will unfortunately persist.
