Prayers for the family affected by it. My dad said something about it possibly B-Lining and ending up Jacksonville, NC, where he's at. Hope he and anyone else who's possibly in the way makes it out alright.

Because clearly everyone living in areas hit by Matthew has the means to pack up all their possessions, flee to a safe state or country as the case may be, and continue to support themselves when they have lost their homes, incomes, social support networks, and many if not all of their possessions. But yes, let's mock the dead and call them idiots instead of actually acknowledging the extreme hardships that come with evacuation efforts.

If it had anything to do with poverty, why would they bring up the "freedom" argument at all?

Obviously because he has heard of people refusing to evacuate and claiming that they are free to do so and he is rather angry with them.

When I was in high school, I picked up a 300ZX turbo cheap because it had been flooded out.
It was mechanically sound, and the interior had been saved, so I just had to rewire it.

Generally, nodody knows where the money is going. That's the story of this country. It's the greatest money pit of the western hemisphere for most of the NGOs. Nothing really changed since 2010, no emergency plan, no real building code, no sustainable growth, etc. A lot of people still living in UN tents and any haitian citizen with a diploma or a profession wants to get the hell out of there. It sounds cynical but we're gonna see this again and again.

"Hurricane Matthew left a tableau of devastation across southern Haiti, destroying houses, leaving villages under several feet of water and killing more than 800 people, according to a count by Reuters."

Haiti has never recovered from the earthquake on Jan. 12. Some of those people didn't have houses, aggravating the effects of Matthew. To make it worse, the hurricane even ruined the fruit trees.

In addition, they have the cholera:

"Six years ago, as the country attempted to rebuild following a massive earthquake, cholera began spreading in Haiti. And it didn’t stop.

Adults and children – many of whom contracted cholera by drinking untreated water from familiar rivers and streams – lay listless in hospitals packed to capacity with emergency cases. The death toll mounted. The months passed. The cases continued. Stories of pregnant women and tough little girls and boys struggling to survive became the norm and were well recorded by partners on the ground, who were bearing witness to what is now considered the worst cholera outbreak in recent history.

Today, as heartbreaking reports on the death toll from hurricane Matthew appear, we’re already hearing warnings about the potentially devastating aftermath: flooding and another surge in cholera cases, possibly reaching levels not seen since the earthquake."

Maybe you don't understand but people have to shed blood, sweat and tears to get a home especially if they are of poor income. My family for example lived in public housing and it was a momentous occasion when we got our first house and when hurricanes and tropical storms hit we stood by and never left because it is ours. Staying and letting looters take your shit will be nerve or suicide inducing.

I've got a feeling such people might have been already on the verge of suicide if the mere possibility of looting was enough to push them over the edge.

Besides, why risk getting killed by the looters even if you expect to survive the storm? Or risk that a self-defense shooting of a looter was mistaken for murder?

Let the cops handle the situation. They're more qualified to anyway.

Most of the times in these situations the authorities will not be able to reach you.

"Reach you?" Surely you meant to say "reach your home," seeing as how the premise of this conversation is that you would be absent?

In any case, that's one of the many valuable ways military presence can protect a disaster area. Maybe you could push for more military presence, rather than taking the law into your own hands?

In case you haven't noticed but it's completely legal in most of the US to protect your property with lethal force if necessary. The military is not allowed to interfere with civilian affairs.
