Ok everyone 1, 1am eastern update on the hurricane.

The storm is 50 miles ESE of Vero Beach, FL, 90 miles SE of Cape Canaveral, moving in a northwesternly direction (325 degrees - that's a little north of northwest). Movement speed is 13 miles per hour.

Vero Beach is reporting 44mph winds sustained with gusts, peak gust was 62mph.

Stay safe out there. I'll give the electricity status when rick scott posts the next one. He's been doing it every hour.

My great aunt lives in Sebastian which is just north of Vero Beach.

Last I heard, it was plotted to swing out into the Atlantic somewhere near the Carolina's, head south, then come back and cross Florida from East to West then angle up and hit either Mississippi or Louisiana. At least, that was at about 2pm CDT. Anyone know if they still have that as the plot of where it will be heading? Or have they altered that prediction in the last 11 hours?

I have an older relative who lives in a nursing home in Vero Beach, and it just occurred to me: It must be hard for nursing homes and the like if they are ordered to evacuate. Hopefully they've got their shit together and everyone is safe.

It generally is hard. I know some homes opted to keep their charges inside and just hunker down and ride it out during Katrina. I think I heard about at least one place in St. Bernard Parish, which generally got the full force of the storm surge, and then they had to extract the residents by boat and chopper. I also know for a fact that the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS also stayed (I believe Jim Cantore reported from there at one point), although the building was pretty sturdy (based on info passed along to my family the year before, when Ivan was a thing). Generally, though, I would be absolutely shocked, if given those two instances alone, that any nursing home didn't evacuate anybody they possibly could.

There's like dozens of predictions that have been made in various places about what Matthew is going to do. I certainly hope it doesn't come to Louisiana, but I don't know.

Actually, it hasn't made landfall, and it looks like it won't. Latest projections have the center of the storm staying over the ocean, more than 30 miles from shore. This still means the coast will be in very bad shape, but they've revised the peak wind projections downward further inland.

It won't hit Louisiana or any of the gulf states. As it's going to be a tropical storm once it comes back to the Bahamas.
