It's a sad sort of situation when you have a hard time thinking of organizations who are actually actively, and legitimately, working towards peace out there in the world. We have a number of groups loudly protesting, or flag-waving, or shouting about this, that, or the other problem, but I wouldn't quite categorize their efforts as either peaceful, or encouraging peace. Some have been mentioned here already, others have not.

I cannot, for reasons I would hope might be obvious, list any American political personages. Those operating under the delusion that anything most of these people are doing is for the greater good, for selfless reasons, or for any actual peace, may need to re-examine things minus the rose-colored glasses. (That's just an opinion, mind you. Not pointing fingers at anyone in particular.)

Doctors Without Borders continues to be an organization that does what it can to help those least able to help themselves, and usually, the least responsible for the horrible things going on in the worst areas of the world - the innocent bystanders, the civilians who don't know where to turn, what to do, and who are caught between two or more warring factions, and invariably, being the ones paying the ultimate price for it. That said, they've been nominated and won already.

Perhaps a spin on that, then -the doctors, nurses, and others who are working in the underground hospitals and other such places in Aleppo, primarily, and other targeted cities this past year. The people who have been attempting, without sufficient water, power, tools, medicine, without sanitary conditions, and under threat of, or actual bombardment, still valiantly attempting to do what they can to save lives.

The people doing brain surgery on blood-soaked floors in the middle of recovery rooms because there is no other option. The people working feverishly to remove ball bearings from the spines, brains, livers, and other parts of children who have been hit by cluster bombs with the markings of supposedly 'civilized' countries on them (yes, that would be Russia). The people who have no time to clean the mess up in between operations because of the constant flow of humanity into these often dimly-lit, maze-like structures, sometimes as the buildings collapse around them.

The people showing a sense of humanity in a place where that word seems to have lost meaning in all the pointless politically-driven bloodshed.

I figure that'd be my nomination this year. It's the best I can think of. It may not be actively encouraging peace, but it's bringing what peace they can to those who are suffering from a severe lack of it.

I don't think that you can nominate MSF, aka Doctors Without Borders. They won it last year, thus making them ineligible. Have you read the OP?

Actually it appears like you didn't read Nathi's nomination thoroughly.

I'm pretty sure there's a name for this "if they were wrong before, that means they are wrong now" argument, but I can't remember (sounds alot like the "science was wrong before" argument, which is bullshit). Anyway.

Because mass media's slogan "if it bleeds it leads" is 100% the same as the scientific method /sarcasm

My point was that mass media will report in a manner that lets them increase their revenue, since they want to keep their jobs. They're rewarded for sensational reporting. On the other hand, scientists need for their experiments to actually work, if they want to advance. Comparing mass media to science is like comparing Neil DeGrasse Tyson to Jim Cramer. It's phenomenally stupid.

Bit hard to do with someone who claims that he's losing brain cells when responding, and yet, somehow, responds. Hmm, who might do something like that:

European Guilds wrote:I'm not going to waste more time on this and kill my braincells trying to talk to you.

Oh look, a personal attack, so, erm, let's see here, you claim that responding to A loses braincells, and then you, almost instantly, respond to A...

European Guilds wrote:Talking about Rick Sterling, did you know he was a founding member of the Syria Solidarity Movement, which regularly spreads pro-Assad propaganda?

The way that you get to the truth, is that you read intelligent entries by the anti-Assad side and by the pro-Assad side. Similarly, when you want to vote in the US, you read sources from Clinton, from Trump, etc. You don't just focus on pro-Trump pieces, anymore than you just focus on just anti-Assad propaganda. You get most of the views, and then search for the truth, after being informed. Or you can claim to lose brain cells after responding to A, and then continue to respond to A. Your call.

So far many arguments have been made, and the debate is getting a bit too dispersive for the purposes of nominations. Give the Committee 24 hours to compile the nomination list so far - we will also make proposals for a possible unification of some nominations.

In the meanwhile, please refrain from further in-depth analysis of the Syrian war and of its participants.

You don't really want the Committe just to kill off any nomination regarding the Syrian war, right? Everyone, let's take a 24-hour hiatus about Syria. Give the Committee time to ponder, file nominations, and present eventual suggestions.

Not at all. The mass media is rewarded for sensationalism. "Russia Starts War" grabs more headlines than almost anything else. Accurate reporting? Puh lease. How many articles mentioning Crimea actually mentioned the three polls, conducted by three credible western polling agencies, that show that Crimeans want to be with Russia? But let's go beyond Russia, what about Iraq and the Incubator Stories of the 1990s? The one where a direct beneficiary of the war told lies about incubator babies. Or even in the current conflict, how many sources mention what parts of Aleppo are government controlled vs what parts are not, specifically going into detail? There are many times that mass media goes out to propagate in order to increase their views.

Heck, look at the damn Trump-Clinton debate and consider the questions. There was one relating to Obama's birth certificate. I mean what the actual fuck? It was a non-issue in 2008, and yet the mass media is still keeping it alive. "Obama D-Kenya" became a meme, with no actual facts whatsoever. For crying outloud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBPgXjkfBXM @6:41

"A web editor that Stephen Colbert never met, posts a tweet in his name on an account that he does not control, outrages a hashtag activist and the news media gets 72 hours of content... the system works"

"Colbert racist" bleeds a lot more than "stock market volatility due to..."

And trying to pretend that mass media is only wrong once, or twice, or just a few times, is wrong, when the system rewards them for being sensational, irrespective of whether they're right or wrong.

(This response only relates to mass media, and does not affect Syria. All mentions of Syria have been taken out of this response.)

The one for Juan Manuel Santos and the FARC isn't, considering that they brought an end to Latin America's longest running civil war; a very destructive war that has seen so many people suffer and been a cause of many of Colombia's problems. The one for the doctors in places such as Aleppo is also rather good, albeit I think Santos and the FARC are more deserving.

Too little and too generic for a nomination. What did he accomplish so far exactly?

He has fought to usher in a new era in American politics which will make the world safer by challenging the greed and warmongering of the established political order by forging new relationships that will resolve the problems of global conflict and unequal trade through dialogue and negotiation rather than confrontation and exploitation.

Really those bums over my nominee Rodrigo Duterte?

I would like to nominate Rodrigo Duterte, and no, this is not a joke nomination. I am being very serious. I intend for him to win.

I believe Rodrigo Duterte represents a new kind of social democrat. A social democrat who creates peace in society through law and order. He is a man not afraid to counter liberty, a so-called virtue that actually allows the individual to oppress the collective. He countered the right to free speech which can be used in order as a tool of oppression by privileged ethnicities, shooting a person who was racist to him. Such heroism is rarely found in world leaders.

He supported representation of minorities by appointing Deputy Mayors to represent groups not part of more privileged Philippino ethnicities, an immensely progressive move. In his capacity as a Mayor, he sent rescue workers to assist in the disaster management of a major typhoon. He helped drug addicts recover from their addiction and even had a personal approach to this, giving them money if they met with them directly to fund this recovery. He visited camps of armed communists in order negotiate peace. He enacted later night restrictions on drinking, thus enabling people to GET SOME FUCKING SLEEP (peace at night time) and he lowered speed limits thus saving people from being hit by cars and giving them peace in knowing they probably won't get hit by some cunt going really fast. He bought ambulances. He bought police vehicles. He invented CCTV cameras. His modesty knows no bounds, for he rejected anti-smoking awards, awards for combatting cancer and even some best Mayor in the world award. All his work, overall, reduced crime so low and the city he was Mayor of was thankful.

All of this has been blown away by his time as President. He launched a complaint line open for 24 hours, making him the most accountable President of the Philippines. He won a case regarding a territorial dispute with China, thus averting war as the Chinese would not dare someone as holy as Saint Rodrigo. He eneacted a policy of poverty reduction. He named several officials involved in the drug trade. We all know that the War on Drugs is one of the biggest disturbers to world peace and I am immensely proud of Duterte's role in fighting it. His policy of allowing the evacuation of drug dealers has kept drugs off the street in the Philippines and thus parents don't have to worry about their kids sniffing glue or something. Duterte has worked hard at bring an end to the armed oppression of the Muslim minority. He is done so much for peace. He is the greatest peace President the world has had.

I was especially proud at him standing up to President Barry Soetoro, the pig dog American imperialist. He has ordered the withdrawal of colonial forces and has ended joint patrols with the US to avoid antagonising the Chinese. He has stood to the US' and the UK' importing of terrorism to the Middle East. He has threatened to leave the US-dominated United Nations and set up his own counter-organisation with the Chinese and other Asian nations. He called Barry a 'son of a whore', the purest an act that has ever been expressed by the leader of a nation-states against American imperialism.

So vote. Vote for Rodrigo Duterte - hopefully a future UN General Secretary who will bring world peace.

Dread Lady Nathicana wrote:It's a sad sort of situation when you have a hard time thinking of organizations who are actually actively, and legitimately, working towards peace out there in the world.

I support this. I was going to nominate them myself but couldn't figure out an appropriate name for them other than a lackluster "Underground Angels".

Edit: Aw shit. I procrastinated submitting this hours ago and didn't see the call to pause Syrian-related nominations. Ris, would it be easier on you if I removed this post and submitted my support later?

I wear teal, blue & pink for Swith
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

Err yea just one thing. The YPG are not angels, they are the least bad militant group in Syria. Not necessarily worthy of a peace prize for that, especially when we consider who they affiliate with. Personally, I think they've been the subject of too much lionization at this point.

Is it really necessary to hail the Syrian branch of a school bombing terrorist organization as having made great contribution to human rights and peace? Why not leave them be and avoid whitewashing?

Peace prizes are sometimes for the least bad. However, I would like to withdraw my nomination and transfer it to Juan Manuel Santos and FARC. Even that nomination is similar, given that it gives FARC equal recognition to Santos. Last year's NSG Peace Prize included Iran, Russia, and China as part of the award.

Unlikely someone else will support Putin, so I support the nomination of Duterte.
