First of all, why do you insist i'm not an Orthodox? If i was not i would have told you..

Second of all, what are these old ladies doing to my nearest church every sunday bowing down to the painting of Mary with baby Christ in her hand?

They are sending their respect to Christ and the Theotokos through a medium. Think of it like mailing someone money in an envelope. You wouldn't say you gave the envelope money.

I insist you're not Orthodox because the views you express have been anethemized.

No, I'm sorry, i don't see how you can please Christ by kissing a painting when you entering the church, maybe it's me, but I find it ridiculous, Doesn't Christ know if you respect him or not? Also, the priests only become priests for the money, it's an easy way to get money since we have a crisis here, I don't see how one of these can clean your sins, who said he can do it? only Christ can clean our sin and nobody else, he is not giving his grace to anybody to clean sins because they didn't die on the cross, he did, that little style the priests are doing, while in church all holy and stuff, but when the church ends they get in their Mercedes and drive off to their rich home with their 5 kids, ridiculous. Just wanted to mentioned it since talk attracted the subject.

By this logic, you shouldn't pray either, because Christ knows what you want.

>Priests only in it for the money
Priest's salaries are pretty small, some priests don't even get paid for it, which is why the Russian Church is creating an official rulebook for what professions a priest may not have.

The priest doesn't clean your sins, Christ does; the Priest is there to give you advice as you confess your sins, and also to convey the canonical teachings on the sins you have committed.

Praying is not the same as kissing an icon, with praying you speak to God, kissing an icon of Christ will get your lips full of bacteria (that's NOT my argument)

But that's a cool thing Russia did, our church should do it too..

Liberty is not anti-christian, so much so that Jesus Christ can be considered as libertarian.

It's a bit weird to assign modern political labels on Christ, though.

Honestly, Orthodoxy is the closest you'll get to a Bible studying religion, the only negatives is that we worship idolatry, which God forbids, and we tend to have a stereotype where if you do good deeds to to other people you'll be saved, that's partly true, but alot of people that do this are not doing it by will, they are doing it because the church says so..

You know, you could be the one to restart Iconoclast Orthodoxy. :)

Isn't that a sect?

They're Abrahamic, so they're far closer to Christianity than most people. They're religious people with some similar morals, so I think we should be allies in a time where all religions are under challenge.

It's a bit weird to assign ancient ethical rules on modern society though.

It goes both ways :p

Not nearly as much. Society, like time flows in linear progression. the future is shaped by the past. It makes much more sense for modern ethics to be founded upon the ethics of the past, than it does to look backwards and relable the past with modern terminology

Say what? Catholicism? Where you worship the pope as your holy father and pray to statues that the Bible forbids doing so? I don't have a problem with Catholics, but I do have with the pope and his Vatican, it's full of dirty stuff, research it and you'll feel disgusted, virgin Mary is crying up there in heaven because you worship her, that's why the statues are crying.. But I guess the Bible also forbids iconolatry, which Orthodoxs tend to practice.. A painting of Christ or a statue if virgin Mary will not enhance your religion, trust me..

Yeah, protestantism tends to be less corrupt than catholicism. I mean, they do focus a great deal on the Cross, though.

Where I live, there tends to be a lot of Protestant televangelists who scam old people out of their money and offer items which they claim will bring blessings (such as "holy water" they say you can sprinkle over your bills and get them paid). I'm sure not all Protestant sects have this, but it happens enough that I would have to disagree that Catholicism is more corrupt than Protestantism.

This sounds like a scam typical of the South. Or possibly the Midwest.

The Mid-South-West. Mostly Bible-belt states

He also wants the world to know that environmental degradation is a moral and ethical concern. Demons must have been whispering in his ear when he said that. And let's not forget how Pope Francis wants us all to know that we need to be doing more to aid the plight of the poor and oppressed peoples of the world. Definitely the work of Satan.

Spent some time during work reading through all this and I just can't fathom ever having the patience you have, Tars.

Whenever I get angry or frustrated I try to remember this passage:

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8 If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

No matter what insults or blasphemies someone might throw against God or God's church, it is but stardust compared to His majesty, so don't worry about it. God is not mocked.

Honestly it has much more in common with Judaism than it does Christianity.

It's primrily Law based and tribalistic.
