Ok, I thought of a new way of public transit thats

1.Free to ride
2.Is impervious to terrorist attacks
3.Green
4.Awesome
5.Is safer then driving a car

I did this in my NS nation and most people thought it was a good idea.

The idea is:

Big air powered cannons that will blast you from place to place via cannons and safety nets. Safety nets get replaced daily.

What do you guys think about this actually being a real world?

Parachutes do not help much at such low heights. By the time it fully deploys you are already splat. Also parachutes as greatly adds to the cost, complexity and time.

1. You can't operate anything for nothing unless it is an supplement to a profitable service, which in turn can absorb the cost. Even if entirely automatic (e.g Copenhagen Metro), the control staff still needs to be paid.

2. Nothing can be impervious to terrorist attacks unless you tackle the social issues behind it. Britain’s role in the invasion of Iraq caused more problems and now we have ISIL (to avoid confusion with the Egyptian goddess). Austerity and now the Brexit hasn’t helped either – both have an opportunity to fuel local social unrest like the 2011 riots and the post-referendum rise in reported hate crime (BBC, 10 August 2016).

3. Although very hard to be self-sustaining, it is possible to source the power for the system from mostly clean sources (UK uses 24% renewable energy out of all sources), and I hope that the Paris Accord will push the share higher to a point where we can have 100% clean sources. There is plenty of solar and wind for Greece – solar power went from negligible to around 2,400 MWp between 2009 and 2015. For older infrastructure and existing means, the focus has been on getting more miles for money ever since the winglet revolutionised aircraft efficiency (according to NASA). Ryanair and easyJet do not have old planes because they perform better than older ones (Wendover Productions on YouTube, 31 May 2016).

4. I see awesome as in design, but the appeal would decline if it goes unmaintained. This is why it is impossible to operate a transit system for free.

5. Public transport is currently a lot safer than driving but the crime element is down to social issues. In the UK, years of worrying about terrorism have threatened social trust and social relationships.
