The US would bring Americans products down to Panama. Panama was no industrial hub so most products weren't made there but in America. The canal did boost their economy but remember for a very long time it was run and operated by the US only until it was handed to Panama did it really become a economic asset.

That is a rather good point. Although we're digressing on the original claim Trump made that American airports look like third-world airports, which is somewhat false depending on which airport we're speaking of. International airports, as a whole, are vastly more impressive than third-world airports of the same class.
