No, it helped the Panamanian economy as a whole having that Canal down there, and since Panama took over the Canal it has been given them a good boost on their economy to have control over the zone.

The Canal was owned by the US until after the US invasion of Panama and even then it took a decade or so more.

That was built into the agreement when it was made.

The US would bring Americans products down to Panama. Panama was no industrial hub so most products weren't made there but in America.
