At my most callous and realpolitik-y, I like the population sustainment migration provides (plus economic benefits and ties to Latin America). Anything to stave off a demographic cliff, really.

On a serious point, sure, but I'm not sure how practical it might be. I'd argue that the best way to reduce migration is to simply encourage development within the home nations - that's arguably much more achievable in central-southern America than it is in the ME.

If you could find an effective way to create a neoprene bubble around the United States without roasting us to death you'd be a genius for Trump and most of the "anti-immigration" crowd.

The fact that that I don't think that's even possible is a telling sign of why "sealing them off" in any way would be an impractical idea.

Foreign Aid to Mexico and Central America would at least have more hopes to be effective without actually thinking of sealing off the United States in a neoprene bubble, or in Trump's world, a wall. I mean, you'd be equally throwing money at something to solve the problem, except it won't end up just being some sort of statement of our vanity.

The goal would be to reduce immigration to a negligible level so that we could attempt to do this.

If your goal is to reduce illegal immigration to a negligible level, then your best bet would be working with Mexico for stronger border patrol on their side of the border as well as backing presidents who are not from the PRI.

Nieto has been slacking off on his commitments to the international community in regards of improving Mexico, which is typical of his party.

I agree that we should be going with which ever alternative provides the best chance of success. I'm sure if we were really serious about solving the problem, Uncle Sam could cook up some studies. I'd make my final choice of selection from those.

It's kind of interesting. What's happening right now is pretty much why everybody assumed Trump would never actually run for Office, because it would put his business and personal life under a microscope totally outside of his control, rather than him carefully managing tabloid trash and fake press leaks for attention, and using lawsuits to shut down people who looked too closely or got too critical.

I guess his ego finally overwhelmed what little good sense he had.
