I'd say, the west grew too relaxed and forgot how much it's freedom is worth. Hungary fought for it's freedom in 1956 and got it decades later.
It is no wonder that the worst country in Europe, Sweden, is so unaware of it's doom, they did not go to war for centuries. The Swiss on the other hand are at least aways aware and "tense".
