My theory about "the media"

Postby Anonymous Proxy » Sat Sep 03, 2016 10:07 am

As humans we gravitate towards things we feel strongly about. So a polarized and opinionated person is the ideal source of income for the media. So the goal isn't to support one candidate or specific political goal as that generally doesn't make them more money. They want us to feel as strongly as possible about what they are reading and be frustrated with something or become fanatically supportive of something. And it also happens that negativity works more effectively in this way than negativity. As a biproduct we end up with a highly polarized population of people who can't stand each other and can't work together. So perhaps this is a more mundane theory than what many may believe but the implications of this are potentially a lot more dangerous. Most if not all of us are affected by this as am I.

Discuss.

It is meant to be a discussion on what I have posted or for people to post alternate ideas.

I concur with the OP in that the foremost motivation of mass media today is ratings, profit, although collusion between mass media and political and economic powers is a serious problem as well.

what is the alternative theory? that media companies are run as charities, trying not to inflame emotions and to always give a fair and balanced account of all happenings?

Sadly probably too bloggey. I'd recommend adding some more questions and contrasting view points, and remove "discuss" and replace it with the tried and true, obligatory "What say ye, NSG?"

As for the actual topic, I don't think the media is exactly ran by angels that want to always be truthful with you. They've pretty much always wanted to influence your opinion in some fashion, which makes your theory pretty much pointless and void.

In capitalism, you pretty much have a 50/50 chance of being rich or poor. In communism, it's 1/99. What makes people think they have the luck/skill to become the 1% if they can't even succeed in a 50/50 society???
