Bothering people who obviously don't want to be bothered is rude and uncalled for.

IgnorING people is rdue and uncalled for. Wearing headphones is not a universal symbol of please do not talk to me.

This is one of those threads where a "why the fuck are we talking about this bullshit" is appropriate.

With any luck, yes.

Wearing headphones is not a universal symbol of please do not talk to me.

Being busy doing something (like listening to headphones) is totally the universal symbol of "please do not talk to me".

Seriously, I had the most socially awkward officemate ever and even she understood this.

This is one of those threads where a "why the fuck are we talking about this bullshit" is appropriate.

Because
1. Some guy wrote an article instructing men on how to bother women who are wearing headphones to inform them that you would like to put your penis inside them, which prompted people to go "srsly...no"
2. You keep acting like men who bother women when they're busy aren't being rude when they bother these women, but that women who react in any way other than with unflappable kindness are the absolute worst and you wouldn't be surprised if someone punched them for it.

Especially given that said article highlighted "common mistakes" including "allowing the woman to ignore you" and "allowing the woman to take control of the situation". It literally encourages men to see attempts to ignore them as a challenge to prove themselves sufficiently manly.

But no, women with headphones are clearly in the wrong here...

How many times do we have to go around this, after saying no thank you have every right not to respond again.

I think you have the wrong office person with an issue, because on no planet is wearing headphones a sign of go away, it is merely wearing headphones.

A pick up artist is a jerk, all men are now jerks because someone wrote an asshole article?

I've totally worn headphones even if nothing's playing on them as a sign of 'don't talk to me'. I don't mean any offense by it, I just don't want to talk to anyone for whatever reason. You can totally try to talk to someone even if they are wearing headphones, but chances are they will find it annoying.

If I saw someone and thought they were hot, but they interrupted me whilst I was listening to my headphones or reading a book to hit on me, I would become instantly unattracted to them because of how shitty and inconsiderate they are.

That's kind of why I said "if not for the fact that she interrupted him."

...and now I realize that should have been "he interrupted her." I'll fix that in the OP.

If you have headphones, it is easy enough to keep pretending that you didn't hear someone. Ignoring someone when I don't have an excuse like wearing headphones at the moment however, has only gotten me bad results. You might instead get mistaken for being a moron. I could be minding my own business musing over my internal thoughts when I'm interrupted, if I keep walking away or ignore them people often go- "Hey! I'm talking to you? I asked you a question."

Now I do my best to react quickly enough to give a response even if I wasn't listening and don't know what they said instead of blankly staring back like I might've years ago. With extreme introversion, it is more difficult to comfortably communicate but you can force yourself to given enough practice and resolve. Last thing I want is to antagonize someone more than I have to. Dealing with troublesome situations just sometimes has to be done to better function in life.

And would probably go around punching people no matter what the victims did.

That said, it does sound needlessly antagonistic to ignore someone who, for all you know, is NOT like that. Excuse for punching? Hell no. Something we can strive to make "not the norm"? That sounds reasonable.

Amen. I'd rather not be interrupted when I'm listening to music before going to work. And I wouldn't do that to anyone else either.

Unless the issue is very important, like "OMG help us a guy's having a heart attack" important, you shouldn't be bothering someone like that.

There is no such social obligation. A person has every right to ignore a person who's trying to bother them.

If you think they're an asshole for doing so, that's your problem. What you're saying is no where near a universal thing.
