I like to think that there's reason behind my personal distastes - surely it's not just me who sees things like this as a huge barrier to effective integration and the principles behind them as reflective of some pretty messed up values towards women? Or maybe I've gone off the deep end into Stormsfrontville and should commit seppuku upon realizing my inherent degeneracy?

The Burqa is pretty much native to Afghanistan and basically doesn't exist outside of the middle east. Even with the niqab, only a few thousand women wear one in France, and probably the same number here.

Ive only seen muslim women (well, at least i think they are muslim, im not sure if other religions have similar head dresses) wear the Hijab here in NI.

Think i saw one of those Khimar things once, might have been a Chador though, but honestly never heard of those two before.

It's almost as though you're about as likely to see someone wearing such a fundamentalist item of dress as you are to see a fundamentalist piece of Christian or Jewish traditional garb.

You're right, you'll probably find more men in tzitzit and smart suits than women in the niqab.

I've seen plenty of niqabs and, I think, a fair few burqas in Muslim-dominated parts of Birmingham (Sparkbrook, Small Heath, &c.). They're not the most common form of Islamic dress, but they're not unusual in those areas, either.

i have no doubt this is praising the germans a bit but i do find it kinda funny the procedure so far has been

"we will stay in the single market and drop freedom of movement"
"no"
"the germans will give in, we will get the best deal!"
"no"
"what is berlin really thinking???"
"no"
"hey nissan stay in the UK we'll get you single market access or equivalent we promise, but we're still ditching freedom of movement"
"is my translator broken?"

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Maybe the government is stupid or maybe the words the BBC stuffed into the government's mouth don't reflect its actual thoughts on the matter.

maybe there's a secret awesome plan and we're going to get everything we want thanks to our great position and team of crack negotiators but it's all secret so we don't reveal ~*our hand*~

i don't think we can reasonably discount that yet

What do we want?

The BBC article is built around the government making demands that were already rejected, but the government has not yet made any demands.

we've already promised nissan no tariffs so that seems a big indicator of what we want

It largely depends on where the Deobandis are. They tend to be the more fundamentalist ones in the UK, so in areas where there's pretty sizable Deobandi communities, you tend to see a lot more niqabs.

The details of any deal with Nissan (and seems very unlikely there even in an enforceable deal) haven't been released either.

are we implying that no tarrifs and market access isn't details enough for what the government is aiming for or did you miss the business secretary releasing that information?

The Business Secretary didn't say anything of the sort. He said that tariff-free trade was desirable in a general sense, not that remaining in the Single Market it was Britain's negotiating position.

For what it is worth, tariff free trade for Nissan would not require Single Market membership. A number of countries can trade cars without tariffs with the EU that are not members of the Single Market.

And is only our patron saint because our military fetishist french king, who was only in England for six months of his whole life, ripped off the idea from the Genoise.

^This.

St George's 'real' nationality changes every St George's Day to suit some political agenda. He was 'Palestinian' for a while, then he was 'Turkish', and this year he suddenly became 'Syrian' (which was a particularly tenuous one). 'Black' is, I have to say, a new one.

In reality he was of Greek extraction and born in what is now Israel.

North Europeans lived in both Greece and Turkey in classical times when George is reputed to have lived. George may well have been racially nordic (for whatever it matters).

Greeks are pretty white. Certainly closer to white than black.
