Even the US couldn't really afford to start tanking supercarrier losses, and they've got the world's largest fleet by far.
There would, mercifully, be no situation where Russia attacks the UK and there is no NATO support - since any attack of the UK directly would probably be a limited long-range attack to degrade our ability to intervene in a Russian war in Europe. Or a nuclear attack.

No, socialism is un-British. Libertarianism (economic libertarianism,) and more importantly an embrace of commerce, is what made us the most powerful country on the planet.
Socialism and its weedy entitlements are not only un-British, but anti-British, as many posters have shown here by professing their total lack of loyalty or even contempt for the British nation and its people.

Well, two of the most prominent """socialists""" in this thread would be me and Questers. I would dearly love to join the Army Reserve, because I believe I owe the state my duty (a belief that I owe to my socialist ideals), and Questers is actually joining the regular Army.

Questers actually returned to the UK from several years living in the far east to do so.

If I count than I myself have previously expressed interest in joining the British Army when I'm older, though nowadays I'm not inclined in that direction. I would very much call myself a patriot as things go and am immensely proud to be born and live in a country such as the UK. Again, like IR, I do feel I have a sense of duty to the nation. Nap, a left-leaning centrist, is very much attached to the Commonwealth as a whole (he's Canadian). Socialism and patriotism aren't mutually exclusive concepts.

Well im physically not fit for it, and i would not really want to serve in a military anyway, especially not the British one.

Never cared much for Patriotism or nationalism either, even though i have in my sig that im an irish nationalist that is only because i come from the nationalist community in NI and it does say minor in regards to that, in fact im pretty much not one any more at this point, might as well take it out.

Actually, I wonder if that is likely. Assuming Britain repeals the Human Rights Act and extricates itself from the ECHR, should we expect to see laws being passed reversing ECtHR rulings?

On the one hand, criminalising homosexuality again or banning LGBT people from the military again would probably be massively unpopular moves, but on the other, the British government never wanted to permit those things, so without the ECtHR there to tell them otherwise presumably their conservative Christian morals would reassert themselves.

If you profess a love for your country, would happily serve and die for it (not necessarily in a military context) and are at least respectful for the traditions and institutions of it surely that is enough?

But yeah, maybe the money that they're proposing spending on recommissioning the yacht could go towards more important things. Like replacing the subsidies the farming sector is set to lose.
