How could it possibly in someone's interest to be gay?

You'd have to put up with bigots, you'd make your potential partner list much shorter, you'd have a higher risk of AIDS, etc.

You realize that this is a myth, yes? I hope you do. I have yet to see a credible, unbiased source on this.

Being gay doesn't make you more propense at getting AIDS, sleeping with gay people who have AIDS gets you AIDS.

As a continuation, "The New Atlantis is not a peer-reviewed journal, and has critiqued peer review, widely considered the gold standard in scientific publishing." In addition, and overall, the entire review seems to be, if anything to a "selective reading of transgender medical literature", which doesn't take into account the full medical and psychological knowledge which we have concerning transgender treatment and gender identity as a natural and innate function, which is displayed in how many of his claims are addressed and countered view the current psychological guidelines.

Not to mention that the authors of the study are widely known to maintain widely defunct views, such as autogynaphillia, and overall are well known as not sources with a reputation for good and honest, or unbiased, reporting. Instead they tend to often be very very wrong, and have a track-record of this.

So yeah, overall we have a very obviously biased source, from a very selective and ill-informed writer who has a history of anti-LGBT+ views, and a report that uses data either irrelevant, misinterpreted, or already debunct...so convincing. But, of course, anti-trans and anti-LGB+ people will still use it despite its very obvious issues and irrelevancy.

They tend to be at higher risk for suicide in overly conservative areas or, generally speaking, environments which are hostile to people of their specific sexuality/gender identity if it isn't heteroconformative (is that a word?) and / or conforming with whatever chromosomes they have. Generally, anywhere they are forced to be repressed and crippling depression happens.

But that's an easy fix, if they move somewhere where nobody cares.

Exactly. TransAdvocatesums this point up very nicely about how harassment leads to minority stress, and additionally suicide.
"the tremendous discrimination, harassment, violence, and economic stability faced by the transgender community. According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, 78% of trans students had experienced harassment at school, 90% of trans people have experienced harassment in the workplace, 26% had a lost a job due to being trans (which, in-turn, leads to a 4-fold increase in risk of homelessness), 19% had experienced housing discrimination, 19% had been refused health-care, 22% had been harassed by law enforcement. Overall, 63% of trans people had experienced a serious form of discrimination, while 23% had experienced what the NTDS categorized as “catastrophic” levels of discrimination. It can come as little surprise that people struggling with a serious condition of body integrity who are then simultaneously subjected to massive structural discrimination with little in the way access to the usual safety nets would be so likely to attempt to take their own lives. These are not individuals for whom transition-related treatment has failed; these are individuals that our society and social justice systems have failed."

Depends on whether they're a romantic asexual. Those folks are actually rather in demand among victims of sexual trauma.

Certainly breaking from the many others in this field. How do people feel about this? I personally think this was a politically motivated paper, contrary to what other scientists have claimed to be true.

Dunno why it being a choice would suddenly make it unacceptable. If it's a choice, tough toenails, you don't get to decide what someone else eats for dinner or what car they drive. If it's not, tough toenails, you don't get to decide whether or not someone else can see without glasses or is afraid of heights.

Its pretty well established that it isn't a choice, and the article in question, its source journal, and the authors, have already been established as not being able to be trusted as unbiased, and what is discussed in the article is not congruent, and in fact is contradicted, by the current medical understanding of sexuality and gender identity.

In all honesty, its really not an article to be taken seriously.

Because we believe that something being a choice means we have some way of altering it and a lot of people don't like LGBTs, so believing it's a choice might make them more prone to thinking that they can alter it somehow, so... yeah.

Really, even the nature vs nuture argument is a lot more of a valid argument than this.

IIRC, the gay community is disproportionately more affected by AIDS then the rest of the population and since anal sex has more risk of transmission of the virus than vaginal one, it's sadly unlikely to get better.
