The title of this thread made me think that he'd killed two people then tried to eat his own face.

For all the human obsession with the misery of other human beings, I just don't get why murderers and other freaks get so much media coverage, being advertised as if they had done something good. Guy killed two people and tried to eat one's face - so what?! Lock the nutcase up in a looney bin where he belongs and be done with it, not make a worldwide celebrity out of him!

I think the lot of you would agree that the world would be a much nicer place to live in, if the news actually reported nice things rather than constanty nitpicked the most shocking, violent and disgusting incidents to cover.

Oh, undoubtedly. But feel-good stories don't generate ratings, shocking/horrifying stories do.

Given this isn't Florida's first "zombie" attack though, it does merit pondering what the hell socioeconomic situation down there is driving enough people into using drugs such as bath salts as to give Florida a reputation for this crap.

I may have an answer to that:
1. It is Florida.
2. People in Florida are realizing that they are living in Florida.
/DUMBJOKE

In reality, Florida's always had a reputation for being a "weird crap" magnet - just look up "Florida Man" on Google on any given day of the week and I'll bet you that there will be a crazy headline about how a Florida man did something utterly absurd and is now in police custody. It's just that in this instance, the absurdity wound up veering straight into horror territory.

I think there would be a lot less crime if the media just stopped glorifying it by giving various crazies and degenerates free advertisement. And I'm not talking just copycat crimes - when all you hear in the news is violence, murder and more violence and murder, eventually it becomes a subconscious norm in your mind even while consciously you might still be shocked and disgusted. Yet deep down you come to think of it as normal - people do shocking and disgusting things everywhere all the time and are treated like celebrities for it, so evidently it must be normal.

From there, it's just a matter of circumstance until weaker-willed individuals can be tempted into similar acts. That is how, for example, ISIS terrorist propaganda works - targeting weak and unhappy people already desensitized to violence and murder by the media by glorifying acts of shocking violence, casting the murderers as badasses and basically inviting malcontents and losers to become badasses like them.

Well Cannibal from Florida calls it Trump shall be President.

What kind of topsy turvy world do we live in where weed is illegal but bath salts aren't?

Chris Hansen and Dateline NBC once did an expose on these things, about how they seriously fuck people up almost as bad as meth. Fuck bath salts. And fuck the idiots who sell them freely.

Sensationalism isn't good.

Sweeping things under the rug isn't good, either.

This kind of news makes me terrified.

Because when the ice-caps completely melt, and the coastal areas flood, refugees from Florida are going to spill out into the rest of the south, assaulting people with alligators and eating their own faces.

Smother your pets, Eat your valuables, Burn your children. The Floridians are coming.

Well, let it be given a brief mention in the local news without elaborating all the grisly and disgusting details and be done with it, not basoon that nutjob's crimes nationwide and beyond as if he had received Congressional Medal of Honour.

I think news outlets would do their nations a big favour by focusing on people who do good and heroic things, not the crimes of deranged murderers and other degenerates. There are plenty of good, positive stories that can be sensationalized and glorified to heart's content - firemen and EMTs saving lives, soldiers winning battles and protecting comrades, policemen capturing dangerous criminals, hell, even scientists making discoveries or rich folks doing charity work can be glorified. The bad things can be mentioned merely as footnotes to provide context to the good deeds of these real-life heroes.

I certainly wouldn't call that sweeping things under the rug. The world is a miserable and depressing shithole as it is, no need to make it even more miserable and depressing by reminding everyone about it at every opportunity.

It wasn't actually bath salts the first time. That was speculation by a police official that got picked up by the media as fact, but it turned out there were no bath salts in the first face-eater's system.
