How can there be scientific evidence for what is ultimately a philosophical question? As I clarified, people don't exclude animals from moral judgment (nominally) because of some strictly applied standard. They do it because that's how it's done. They don't think about it. They just reject lower animals as amoral without cause.

Not true. Cats can cleary feel pain, pleasure, happiness and sadness. As well affection towards specific other cats and people.
