Family Guy. The latest season or two has been a bit lacklustre. However, The Simpsons, to me, were never funny and should've been canned 10 years ago. How they've remained on the air with the same jokes for 20 years is entirely beyond me.

It's humor, at least during the "golden age", was clever. Family Guy? That show relies mostly on fart and sex jokes and controversy.

Family Guy humor: Fart! Hahaha. Sex! Hahaha. Fart fart sex sex! Hahaha. Show's creator's political beliefs and controversial joke! Hahaha. It's just stupid.

This. Oh God, this. I can't stand Family Guy; I consider it one of the worst animated programs to have ever aired. Each episode has maybe four to six plot relevant minutes while the rest is composed almost entirely of "remember that time" gags or the "fart fart sex sex!" type "jokes" mentioned above. In most episodes, you can tell that the writers are desperate to graft specific jokes into the episode, which is why they rely so heavily on the "remember that time" formula.

I also sort of blame Family Guy for Arrested Development's failure, and AD was probably the best/funniest/most well written live action television program I have ever seen. Fox was too busy promoting Family Guy to care about AD, and probably decided (based on the profound and mysterious success of FG) at some point that they didn't need it. In a perfect world, Arrested Development would run for ten-plus years and Family Guy wouldn't have made it past season 4.

Currently, Family Guy, it still has a good episode now and again, and the Simpsons, I think is more around for nostalgia purposes these days...

If we're talking overall, legacy included, then The Simpsons, by a factor of South Park, ;)

Fixed. ;)

I'll not deny that the Simpsons lost steam after season 11 or so (most people say season 9, but season 10 is still mostly good and about half of season 11 is watchable, and actually contains a few of my favorite episodes), but it might be worth noting that FG probably wouldn't exist without the Simpsons; being as it's a more or less total rip-off. Fat, stupid guy with a beautiful wife, a son who's just like his father, a socially outcast daughter, and the baby is the only one who really knows whats going on. The only discernible difference in character format is that Meg isn't portrayed as highly intelligent and the dog and baby talk. That's about it.

I'm going with the people who said Futurama - that show was funny and managed to affect my whole life *deadly serious* :geek:
"Grasping the relation of the infinite and self is an act of faith. Essentially, in virtue of absurdity, we can have both the infinite and the self in perspective and be a knight of faith. Freedom is being a ‘self’ as one wills to be… ‘Duty is the expression of God’s will’…but can’t… Can’t God be, subjectively, something or someone else? Acting for them, in duty to them, could still let us have faith. Being a knight of faith for them would mean determining your relation to the universal to your relation to the absolute"

I actually think South Park is funnier than the Simpsons on the whole, but they're on Comedy Central so they get to make jokes that the Simpsons can't. I can't wait to see what Futurama looks like on Comedy Central.

I've began rewatching The Simpsons regularly again, Season 21, and am so very, very, pleased to see it pretty much back to form.

You know, I can't stand South Park. To me, it tries too hard to be funny, cool, shocktastic and all.

As for what you said about Family Guy, it's easy for me to forget just how long it's been on the air. I actually only started watching it a few years ago.

Yes, but you could've been just as happy months ago, and used that to get you through troubled times. Just imagine when your house burned down, and you thought "my god, my material possession are all gone!" You could've said, "Self. Get a grip. Futurama this summer." "Thank you, self. LIfe's much better now."

Remember when zombie children ate your favourite pet? Then, too, could you have found solace in the news.

Remember when you remembered you saw the 6th star wars movie a couple months ago? Futurama could've healed you.

David Cross tells it like it is.

Fox has a habit of ignoring shows (no matter how good they are) based on their executives' personal preferences: the Simpsons may actually be the only exception I can think of. Fox executives have (allegedly) hated the Simpsons for years, but they keep renewing the contract on account of the money it brings in. They canned Futurama not because it was a bad show or it was getting bad ratings, but because the executives just plain didn't like it. That's their prerogative, I suppose, but I'll never forgive them for letting AD die.

I think AD's only real failing was that you kind of had to watch it from the beginning to understand it, although I would argue that doubles as one of its greatest strengths on account of the plot continuity it created. From start to finish (although it takes a couple episodes to really get off the ground) it tells a hilarious and occasionally heartwarming story. My father complained about the narration, but I personally found that it added to the show and was hilarious.

The Simpsons is so old that it has become a self-continuing show. It stays on the air because it is so old and the longer it stays on the air, the older it gets.

The Simpsons jumped the shark a long time ago. Family Guy is funny from time to time. It's a very hit-or-miss show, but I love it when it hits.

I would argue that for this, it's the "apples/oranges" theory, you can't compare them, since they're different, so vastly different in aim and style.
Comparing this is like comparing Dexter's Laboratory to American Dad!, which is obviously ludicrous since they're both aimed at different markets, even if a subset of adults do like Dexter's Laboratory.
