I don't know about the rest of you, but I thought that the opening ceremony was underwhelming.

I don't know what you were expecting. I thought it was neat.

This opening ceremony was nice but not spectacular and to be honest I would have liked a whole lot more Carnaval de Rio - colour, half naked dancers and mass floats.

The Football World Cup Opening was much better than this Olympics opening

Besides that's what Brazil does.

Which is why it's disappointing. We're hoping for something unique, but they literally give us the same old song and dance.

It would be like the Paris opening ceremonies consisting entirely of chansons and can-can dancing, or the Dallas opening ceremonies consisting entirely of country music and line dancing: stereotypical and utterly predictable.

So we have water polluted with disgusting chemicals, sewage, and superbacteria for the various events involving boats, unfinished and shoddily constructed athlete housing, corruption, major crime problems, a doping scandal that's knocked out a third of the Russian team, unpaid police and firefighting forces, a paralyzing political and economic crisis afflicting Brazil at every level, and a scary new epidemic striking the region and causing athletes to skip. And they also had to shoot that jaguar a little while back.

Look here's a hypothetical.

Say two people both grow up to be famous painters. One paints four famous paintings, the other paints ten famous paintings.

But the first person was born thirty years earlier. So when the second artist is on his third famous painting does he have catching up to do? Yes because the other person has more paintings.

Yes I'm aware it's only because the first artist was doing it longer but that doesn't make my statement wrong. Same with Sweden. More medals than China even if it's only because they've been doing it more, so China is behind. I don't see why you don't recognize past Olympic Games. They still count.

I do, but unlike you, I average them so that its fair fo all countries. Had China participated 26 times, it would've topped Sweden. It has nothing to do with paintings, it's incomparable. Let's agree to disagree, simply because you believe in one thing I don't agree in, and you don't agree in something I don't believe in.

But to be clear, I was speaking about 2004-2012 if you want specific Summer Olympics.

I wasn't able to stay up until midnight to four o' clock in the morning to watch the opening ceremony in the British time zone, but it looked pretty neat from the highlights videos on YouTube uploaded overnight that I'm watching this morning, including the Refugee Team. It'll be interesting to see how well they get on compared to the other national teams competing in the event. A lot of lights, a lot of dancing, a lot of fireworks, not as impressive as the London 2012 opening ceremony, but at the same time not as expensive. However, I wouldn't think it was a disaster or complete disappointment as others (on YouTube, primarily) have made it out to be.

The Olympic flame spinny thing from the Opening Ceremony was cool (if anyone knows what I'm talking about).

Yeah, it was the only thing that saved the giant ball-thing that was lit. I saw no use for that (other than the fact it's greener blah blah blah).

I understand the comment a few posts above about the ceremony. I expected more carnival than history, but, it got better nearer the end.

What a mess. Between firefighters and police officers protesting because they haven't been paid, to the World Health Organisation warning swimmers about shit-filled water. The Olympics is a great way to ruin countries with expensive and unnecessary projects they should never be undertaking.

Not to mention shifting money away from the poor, education and healthcare to fund what is essentially a party for the rich, for western athletes and tourists. Same thing happened with the latest two soccer world cups. I think it is morally reprehensible. And then there's the massive "security" measures aimed at keeping those poor out of sight. We wouldn't want to devalue sponsor brands by associating them with the poor dregs of society, would we?
