Pele - whom many considered the favourite to light the cauldron - has had to decline the honour, officially due to health issues.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36987483

Pele's spokesman Pepito Fornos added: "He is walking with a cane. The problem is that if he sits in a chair you need a winch to get him out of it.

"His doctor thought it best that he continues physiotherapy, that he rests and we hope that he will be able to appear at the [Olympic] closing ceremony."

Note that there's some lack of clarity here, however, as Pele himself had previously mentioned a conflicting sponsor's commitment:

Earlier this week, Pele said that he was asked to light the cauldron by the organisers, however he had "an international commitment with an English company". The former footballer added that if he could change his travel plans it be an "honour" to carry out the task.

Great Britain and NI, not UK. eventhough it's the same thing, our programme is GBR not UK.

The only good about Russia participating: listening to their great anthem when they win.

Eurocentrism or similar? A general "screw the poor people" mentality?

Poor people have been screwed in Brazil for years, but there was improvement when the economy was booming.

I don't care too much about the games but I'm interested to see the opening ceremony. Apparently it's going to be quite lacking in the grandeur we saw in Beijing, London, and even Sochi. - http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-36984179

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Can't wait till USA and China are knocked off their high stool in the medal table - maybe that'll be this year, 2020 or 2024 (which should be held in France)

As for the aquatic competitions, it'll come down to whichever nation has the athletes with the most overclocked immune systems.

That is not going to happen. One thing I do not understand is why India does so badly despit their population size.

Oh yeah, of course. We might see LEDC climb the Aquatics medal table.

India, not sure. A lot of countries which do well in European Games, Commonwealth Games etc, don't do well in the Olympics for some reason. India should be topping the league - but maybe training and facilities doesn't match that of US, GBR or France.

It's not subjective. China has less medals than Russia and a number of Western European countries so it's weird to compare it to the US and not another country in medal count.

You were hoping for way too much, in my opinion.

I was planning to watch the Women's Volleyball competitions only and maybe basketball.

You'd better believe I'm a bitter Bernie Sanders supporter. The Dems fucked up and fucked up hard. Hopefully they'll learn that neoliberalism and maintaining the status quo isn't the way to win this election or any other one. I doubt they will, though.
