No, the institutions were horrible places, the amount of abuse those people took was astounding. There is a need for some institutions, but most mentally ill do much better in a group home enviorment. As big a jack ass Geraldo Rivera may ever become. He is a hero to me for how he exposed what happened in mental institutions in Ny, paricularly a place called willowbrook.

Group home environments are indeed a superior alternative for many people in need of help and guidance, but that was not an option originally given to the majority of former patients. They were pretty much thrown into the world, without being ready for the world and without the world being ready for them.

A lot of it was the behaviors they developed because of the mistreatment never went away. It was unbelievably aweful. Living homeless on the streets was a rational choice.

Why does Cop have gun out? Member of the Public (like, not even 'suspect') does not have a weapon, and it should be fairly obvious to see that. How long were they there for that they determined it was necessary to transition from their duty side-arm to rifles to deal with a threat that could not be dealt with by pistols, and yet also failed to note that he had a fucking toy car?

What target? There was a guy playing with a toy car and a man lying on the floor with his hands in the air. Neither of them posed a threat to the officers, to themselves, or to the wider public. There was no valid target.

Cop shoots... and hits the wrong person? With a rifle? At sub-50m? I can do better than that and I haven't held a rifle in the two years since I finished army cadets. I don't even carry a pistol, let alone a rifle on the job, and I'm confident that I could hit the correct target. Not only that, but he was a fucking SWAT officer! That's an utterly inexcusable level of incompetence.

In truth, I am sickened by the casual tone that people use to describe the events that happened. I see this event as not a casual killing, but as a symptom of a greater disease that we are all suffering from.
That disease is called numbness. Being so turned off by so many bad events, that you can no longer find the empathy to react emotionally to horrifying events. That is what I see. I wonder how we have been so drained, so beaten up that we can casually speak about it.

Cops are seeing that shit on the news, probably getting briefings about it, hearing about it through the cop grape vine(sauvignon bleu), and they're getting issued military surplus shit and military looking rifles, taught how to drive these big armoured vehicles, getting fucking RCXDs and "air-to-air capability" and Call of Battlehonor shit like that.

And all this is bouncing around their heads, so when they're starting to going on patrol or out on a call and they're thinking "Next guy who looks squirrelly, he could be a terrorist. He could be about to start shooting into a crowd. He could be out to die and take as many people with him as he can", and if something does happen that's where their mind goes. Not to whatever police training they got to be calm, talk people down and take them in quietly, but to total terror and their psuedo-military-ish training to not hesitate or it could mean your life and a dozen others.

And that's before we consider institutional racism among the police and their reaction to the recent backlash against their trigger-happiness.
