As to the flurry of gaffes from Trump and his people, my take is that they're trying to get the Khan story out of the news.
Covering up a big tactical mistake with lots of small ones, if you like.

It would make sense, and Trump could be said to have given it away in his recent Washington Post interview, where he expressed concern due to how long the Khan controversy has lasted.

So far, I think his campaign and him have failed to accomplish this. The story is still at the forefront in a lot of media coverage, despite all the other gaffes he's made over the past couple of days. And different figures and institutions are refusing to let it go.
