Yeah a lot of people are pointing out the possibility of it being a false flag operation.

Seems like it since it was so poorly coordinated. Gave Erdogan just the right excuse to clamp down.

Yes, but Turkey does no have them. The US has the codes to operate them, not Turkey. So Turkey cannot go off and use them without us turning them over first.

If Turkey somehow tried to seize or steal American nuclear weapons, America, Russia, Europe, and probably Israel and Iran would all flip their shit. Turkey doesn't "have" nukes, America just bases some of its arsenal there.

A rather costly false flag operation if they'd planned on losing a couple of helicopters and a thirty million dollar jet in the bargain.

The arming codes are in the care, custody and control of OUR military, though. They couldn't do shit even if they tried.

But they'd need the US Air Force airmen who know how to maintain them and who can access the bunkers where they're stored, plus the B61s that are in Turkey are unguided tactical weapons that you'd have to deliver by aircraft in order to not die, and it'd be very hard to use them in an offensive situation and not destroy the pilot and the aircraft.

A few thousand American soldiers against the entire Turkish army?

I'm sure the Turks would be able to figure out how to use them and maintain them, although delivery would be difficult, maybe giant catapult :p

Is there any doubt at this point that Erdogan engineered this coup himself?

Besides soldiers reporting they were told it was training, and how convenient it is that Erdogan can now purge thousands of officers and thousands of judges who oppose him politically?

No, absolutely none.

Can I have a source on that? Though it seems to me like something you might say to save your skin if you had taken part in a failed coup. As for 'how convenient for Erdogan' that is not evidence, every failed coup is an excuse for a crackdown, it does require not require it to be a false flag operation. Given Erdogan's seeming popularity did he even need the excuse to have a purge?

It *could* be that the purges were planned anyway, a small group of soldiers found out about them and decided to coup while they still had a small chance of succes. Would explain why it was done so poorly, and why Erdogan had all these measures and arrest warrents readily available.

Sure. If they were told it was an exercise, it would explain why a lot of soldiers surrendered almost immediately and abandoned their vehicles in the middle of the road.

Frank Zipper wrote: Given Erdogan's seeming popularity did he even need the excuse to have a purge?

Yes. He's very popular, but not universally so. If he purged the armed forces without justification, a lot of people would end up siding with the armed forces because any coup would be self-defense.
