All it does is to signal our government to become yet again more fascistic on policing speaches. We don't need that.

I'm not French, but it seems like a political play. An attempt to look strong. Kinda like the ramped up air strikes after the November attacks.
You'd better believe I'm a bitter Bernie Sanders supporter. The Dems fucked up and fucked up hard. Hopefully they'll learn that neoliberalism and maintaining the status quo isn't the way to win this election or any other one. I doubt they will, though.

I disagree. I think without an opening from Islam itself, we can do nothing. The best Western tool I can think of is educating women. But if we do that, Islamists will spin women's education as a Western tool to emasculate the Muslim world, like they do to Polio in Pakistan where they claim Israel sends the vaccines to sterilize Pakistani boys, and turn public opinion against women's education. I don't think we can do anything until there is an opening for us. And as it stands, there is no opening.

The Haskala. A work continued on by such strands as Jewish secularism, Jewish atheism, and Labor Zionism (the original founding ideologies of the State of Israel).

The only real, long-lasting type of support the West can offer is money. Money for development, education, and economic investment. The way I see it, the money is the foundation whereas the locals, Muslim and non-Muslim, are the architects and construction workers.

The sucky part, of course, is that a lot of the target governments are more corrupt than Rod Blagojevich.

Even the money can be a propaganda tools for Islamists. In the Muslim world, Western money is either imperialist or impious. Funding something is ensuring it public opposition.

Because that worked.

What does the state of emergency accomplish?

It gives the State, so police etc. more powers and prerogatives. But it was used up in the first few months, and there's nothing to do with it now.

On a side note, social media is a black-hole of idiocy. The Pray for Nice hashtag is filled with French flags with quotes of Martin Luther King about coexisting (with the IS? Anyone bother asking their opinion), or a cartoon of a wounded Earth looking at a picture of the Earth from a box labelled memories (what the fuck does that even mean?), and a plethora of other idiocies. Do people not know how to just say my thoughts are with the victims and their families? Or better yet, say nothing at all as you are not a person of consequence and are unlikely to have been affected so you don't even need to say anything?

It can also engender a populace receptive to Western, or even just non-fundamentalist, ideas. It happened in Iran and Afghanistan during the Cold War. You just need to do it smartly. Rather than building giant hotels, build schools and hospitals. I have no doubt that blood will be spilt, but, I think, that's how you win the long game against reactionary and fundamentalist forces.

Did it? Iran ended in an Islamist rebellion. The Westernization of Afghanistan was limited to the Kabul bourgeoisie, overthrown by Communists, then overtaken by Islamists. Where has Western support for liberal beliefs ended well in the Middle East?

Hospitals, we can do. But hospitals don't bring about ideological change. Schools do. But we're not there to defend our efforts. The Islamists are there to attack them, and they have nothing else to do.

No nine year old went to jail. A nine year old was questioned after he voiced support for the Charlie terrorists in school, I believe. He was brought it for questioning with his family, because clearly this child didn't learn this behavior alone. He did not go to jail, nor did anyone in his family I believe.
