In Boris Johnson, Britain has appointed a liar with his back against the wall as its new foreign secretary at a time when somebody reliable is needed in the role, his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault said on Thursday.
Johnson campaigned successfully for Britons to vote to leave the European Union last month. In France, a founding EU member, he is seen as a key player in the departure and in the setback to European integration it represents.
“I am not at all worried about Boris Johnson, but… during the campaign he lied a lot to the British people and now it is he who has his back against the wall,” said Ayrault on Europe 1 radio.

Germany's foreign minister has appeared to brand his UK counterpart Boris Johnson as an "irresponsible politician" who "bolted" after Brexit.
"People [in the UK] are experiencing a rude awakening after irresponsible politicians first lured the country into a Brexit to then, once the decision was made, bolt and not take responsibility," Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during a speech at Greifswald University.
"Instead they went to play cricket. To be honest, I find this outrageous but it's not just bitter for Great Britain. It's also bitter for the European Union."
Mr Johnson's appointment as foreign minister in the new UK cabinet has provoked comment around the world, largely as a result of his perceived gaffes, among them comparing the EU to Hitler's Germany.
ITV News' Robert Moore said the appointment has gone down particularly badly in the US.

What time did Hammond announce we're quitting the single market?

Still higher than pre-brexit. Besides, FTSE 100 is just the share index of the top 100 companies on the stock exchange.

So when it goes up, it's proof that Brexit is going to turn out OK. When it drops, it's not representative.

With this foreign secretary appointment, he's been given enough rope to hang himself and put an end to any chance of that. It's only a matter of time before he cocks it up and makes a giant mess, and this time he won't be able to duck responsibility.

I think that's not as likely as you'd think, since his remit does not include Brexit or international trade.

I didn't mean to imply he would be responsible for Brexit - I simply meant that his appointment to foreign secretary, a role that pretty much everyone in the world agrees he would be totally disastrous at, looks a bit like Theresa May disposing of a potential leadership rival by giving him a job he will make a total hash of, thereby destroying any remaining credibility he might have.
