Seems the French president isn't keen on our new PMs approach to preparing before brexit, trying to use the situation to impact his reelection chances. So much for him being a socialist, or believing in European unity, unless he belives in a more Stalinist form of socialism. We may end up negotiating with a right wing French president, who would be more likley to cooperate with us.

Of course, he still wants us to cooperate on defence. I have to wonder if they worry about the possibility of having to face Russia without UK support, and if our government plan to use that during negotiations...

UK isn't that vital for fighting Russia, the US is but UK not so much.

why should he give a toss what we (or rather, the people who voted to leave) want?

UK's not that much. Russia would never attack France as they have nukes (more than us) and would never attack NATO anyway with the US. Sure UK helps but we are not absolutely vital.

And if Russia wanted to invade Europe, UK standing there wouldn't stop them

France has been a member since 1949. It withdrew from the integrated command structure in 1967 and rejoined under Sarkozy's presidency. Not to mention that there were secret accords to bring France back into the command structure should hostilities break out.

Germany has no aircraft carriers and Italy's is not as technologically advanced as the Queen Elizabeth class is. Not to mention, neither have nuclear weapons, though they are participants in NATO's nuclear sharing program.

The UK doesn't have any aircraft carriers either.
