It's not just unattractive males. I am reasonably attractive, and I was apparently accused by multiple women in my dorm room of being a sex offender because I didn't leave my dorm room to socialize often. They started pretty vicious rumors about me that I wasn't even aware of until my roommate told me (he knew it was stupid because I didn't leave the dorm enough for the rumors to be true, but enough believed it to be pretty effective at humiliating me publicly).

One thing I have learned is that women figure out how to pick up subtle behavioral queues. Women tend not to move away quickly from men who are simply unattractive. They do so from men that scare them.
