Serious dilemma though- I haven't a damn clue how persistent to be with girls. I always feel like I either don't push enough or push too much, and I'm always fearful of the latter.

Don't think about being too persistent. A girl once told me it's better to be too persistent than not persistent enough.
Now she identifies as a guy and is my best friend and ex....and I'm waiting for my chance to date her/him again since she's/he's in a relationship. You need to be persistent, yet patient.

Rather than having a single girl help thread because that is really limiting in discussion and scope in 2016. I have decided to make one for relationship advice and how to get one advice for people who need help. This thread will be a place where people can ask questions, give advice and help each other with their problems. There has not been a thread like that in ages and I think it would be an interesting idea. Sorry for the short intro but let the megathread begin, also please no misogyny. 2. Decide if she's intelligent; if not, follow Charlie Sheen model; if she is, read on
3. Start talking to her about her interests
4. Be a bit of a jerk, make her argue with you
5. Let her win the debate, but make her feel like she earned it; that way she associates having good time with you

7. Ask her if it's the right time; first ask, then act; don't act if she says no, duh!

I feel like you're confusing "realistic" with defeatist. "Don't bother trying, you'll never get anything" is a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts. Of course you won't get anywhere if you just quit. I don't consider myself to have very much of either of those traits but that's not going to get in my way. Happiness does not belong to just the blessed but the determined as well.

How though? I feel like I'm unable to gauge this until after it's too late and I've driven her off or lost her interest already.

Granted, I've only had 2 partners over 2 years, so I'm not very experienced at this (yet). That's its own issue though, that I largely prefer to chalk up to lack of extensive social connections

I'll be honest with you and this is probably the only serious thing I'll say in this thread because, frankly, relationship advice threads on NSG are hilarious. But if there is something I've learned, during the past 10 years, is that your relationship is something private, it should be kept private and the quieter you do things in it, the more discreet you are, the better things are probably going to turn out. If you are having issues, don't discuss them on NSG. Talk about them with your partner.

And if you don't know what to do, ask close friends and your parents. If your parents act contentious about your relationship, as much chagrin as that may cause, listen to them and ponder. They have years on you and very often, very very often, they tend to be on point regarding their misgivings.

I can verify that the above statement is true. I wish I had listened to my father sooner. Mistakes were made.

I guess this is the way we learn. Unfortunately. But it is good to dish this out as useful. Parents, very often (I know there are exceptions), know more than we do and we should listen to them regarding this topic.

A lot do. It's way, way easier to get a date if you're rich than if you're not.

Obviously that's not true if you go outside for a second and look around you.

And I see a lot of people with stable, middle class incomes. Pretty much anything below just above min wage is where people draw the line, because people on min wage don't tend to have the same kinds of financial stability as people on higher incomes. Not to mention min wage incomes tend to limit what you can do.
