I think you missed the point of the question. (and 'Shroom can tell me if I'm missing the point myself) Basically, as I see it, the demon and all are just external details. The question is, if you have to choose the death of a girl or 10 soldiers in a war, which do you choose? There is no middle ground, those are your two choices.

By the way, is it just me because I am morbid, or did anyone else think this was going to be a discussion about literally one civilian girl versus ten soldiers in some morbid war scenario?

I was expecting it to be about soldiers raping civilians during wartime and a survivors attempts to gain justice

If you're on the opposing side, it is valid to kill all 11. The 10 would be successfully inflicting casualties while the 1 can be written off as collateral damage.

Honestly, it's a fucking demon. Either choice you're no doubt screwed.

In option two, the demon rotates those ten guys home and 15 guys get killed in their place, and in option one, the drunk driver swerves to miss the girl, hits a bus load of nuns, and the whole scene bursts into flame.

The only winning move is not to play.

Isn't that true for most of these threads?

I thought that too, until I saw who started the thread.

Then I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but I knew it would be anything but topical.

Considering that some of the soldiers who would die probably have families to support and to return home to, I'd save the 10 soldiers.

I think what the right honorable and venerable madame shrooms fails to consider is that most soldiers and soldiering in general presuppose a preference for preserving the lives of civilians even at the loss of their own lives. Now perhaps in a military that relies on forced conscription this may not hold, but in an all volunteer force I would imagine most soldiers would be willing to sacrifice themselves to save even a single civilian life and not just because some international law says this is how it should be but because soldiers by their very nature are about protecting others from harm. Now, perhaps the presumed view of the soldiers shouldn't matter to the person deciding between the two options...I think it should though. That said, I'm not sure I which way I would actually choose to behave in this hypothetical.

Infected Mushroom wrote:Not an American patriot then?

I mean, most American troops don't go on to commit war crimes; they generally (if they kill anyone at all) end up taking out enemy combatants lawfully.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of people in combat zones never end up killing anyone (a majority? or not?)

There's still the question of whether the war is for a justified cause.
