The question is, if you have to choose the death of a girl or 10 soldiers in a war, which do you choose? There is no middle ground, those are your two choices.

If you're on the opposing side, it is valid to kill all 11. The 10 would be successfully inflicting casualties while the 1 can be written off as collateral damage.

I think what the right honorable and venerable madame shrooms fails to consider is that most soldiers and soldiering in general presuppose a preference for preserving the lives of civilians even at the loss of their own lives. Now perhaps in a military that relies on forced conscription this may not hold, but in an all volunteer force I would imagine most soldiers would be willing to sacrifice themselves to save even a single civilian life and not just because some international law says this is how it should be but because soldiers by their very nature are about protecting others from harm. Now, perhaps the presumed view of the soldiers shouldn't matter to the person deciding between the two options...I think it should though. That said, I'm not sure I which way I would actually choose to behave in this hypothetical.

I mean, most American troops don't go on to commit war crimes; they generally (if they kill anyone at all) end up taking out enemy combatants lawfully.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of people in combat zones never end up killing anyone (a majority? or not?)

There's still the question of whether the war is for a justified cause.
