As a former soldier, I agree. Everyone volunteered for a life they knew could end in an instant. I know I would sacrifice myself any day for an innocent.

Personally, I chose the soldiers, because if they're already in an active warzone, odds are that their life may come to an end soon anyway. On the other hand, the girl is in no danger whatsoever, and has an entire life ahead of her.

This demon clearly wants to make the death of the civilian(s) your fault, when in truth they would essentially die anyway and all of them would probably die soon so the demon just wanted to torcher you. Logically of course kill the soldiers and let the girl have a chance at a life which is the reason most people would even join the army.... to protect young children and their families.

I would pick to save the girl. Being a soldier, such a highly worthwhile vocation, is an agreement that you are risking your life. You agree to possibly die. The girl never agreed to it. That said, one could say that the soldiers are better people because they that we know of have done more good (being soldiers) and thus deserve life more. I'd disagree with that though.

I gotta say, I'm pretty shocked that so few people could just take this seriously. It's a pretty basic question: the life of an innocent girl, or the life of 10 soldiers. Binary, no ins or outs. You can say "I wouldn't choose" or make a joke about the thought experiment, but it's not actually constructive or answering the question. I don't see why people make it a point to troll all threads like this. Is it because Infected Mushroom made it? I know people think he/she makes superfluous threads, but why not take threads and questions at face value?

We can benefit more from taking any intellectual question at face value and trying to find an answer than detaching and buffering ourselves from it. Nobody forced anybody to reply to this thread (though the demon would ), so why just troll it? There are plenty of threads to make fun of.

It's a tendency to make fun of anything that is serious, modernity has got us not to take anything seriously. Wether it be life (like Comedy Central's depraved comment about Texas) or intellectual thought experiments. We think of ourselves above questions, instead wanting to be jaded and detached.
