I live in Vermont at the moment and I can't wait to leave. The gun laws are great, but the obscene destitution between towns and vacation homes is just painful. That and the cold. And have I mentioned how not having a police force or fire department sucks ass?

Thats an excellent question. Did you know that for those glorious state services, we pay an exorbitant amount of taxes? We also don't get paved roads. 80% are dirt or gravel, and the state has a ploughing policy where they don't scrape down to the road, so you don't even get snow-free roads.

The local anti-business yuppies have also chased out all but two insurance companies, a nuclear power plant, and all the big box businesses you'd ordinarily want outside of, say, Burlington or Rutland. Like Walmart, or Home Depot.

I hate this fucking state.

One of the specific proposals that I never make was a way to replace the NICS with a more efficient system that also covers private sales.

Just did some quick reading and apparently there are a number of 'false positives' with the NICS checks.
Also doesn't it already cover private sales? ....Or am I not understanding what that means?

I'd rather flee to New Hampshire. I hate the cold, but I encountered so much blatant bigotry and misogyny when I lived in the South, I won't go past the Mason-Dixon line for more than a visit. My wife, a hard-line pagan feminist who I love desperately, has gotten shit down South for wearing hair shorter than mine. Living there so they could find out her non-heteronormative, heretic, anti-traditional ways would be the death of us both. Or at least her. Being a tall white CIS male who goes to the gym enough to at least look like I can take care of myself, they leave me alone.

I'll get to visit plenty. After law school, I'm looking to do intellectual property work for the oil and natural gas industry. One of the Federal Districts based in Texas is the go-to jurisdiction for that, so most corporate counsel gets flown in to handle paperwork there.

I'd be fine to visit, but even if I was convinced, my wife has a pretty good hate-on for the area.

At the moment, there is very little onus on private sellers to make that determination, but I know that Jim has been a supporter of fixing that through a public access to NICS.

I still think it should be a free-access website or app that just tells you "YES" or "NO" after you put in both individual's information. No details as to why, so there is no privacy issue. It doesn't even have to be on a permanent ID.

From there, a log can be kept of the date and time of the sale, attached to whatever the system uses to differentiate individuals in their system. That way, if a crime occurs later and somebody who shouldn't have the firearm is found with that firearm, somebody can literally point to the record to determine if a check was done. You wouldn't even need to include details about the sale itself and run into any issues with "gun registry" claims. There are a bunch of options with that.

If one can make justifiable privacy defences against the retention of metadata, putting on someone's name and seeing if, for whatever reason (which will overwhelmingly be criminal record or mental affliction) they wouldn't be allowed to buy a firearm could be as well.

There could be a possibility for abuse - employers, education administrators, banks and the like could use it to discriminate when there may be no valid reason to deny people for whatever.
