Although I was for Frankfurt, congratulations to Dortmund for the DFB cup :)

Could still have gone differently if it hadn't been for that dumb foul by Hrádecký, and if they would have let this discourage them ....

Mandzukic has become a lot more sexy, don't you think so?

edit, also nice handball in the box by Real's wall. Ref doesn't blow his whistle, tho.

edit2, and as expected the merengues are trying to turn this match into lucha libre.

edit3, and now RM lead on two own goals. The bad luck of Juve in CL finals continues.

I don't like Real Madrid at all -- hell, I'm an Atlético Madrid fan, that's enough to say how much distaste I have for them -- but in their defense, the foul that created the handball shouldn't have even occurred. I don't think it was a foul, myself. And there were a couple of plays where the ref called fouls or handed out yellow cards that were... questionable. For both sides, certainly.

Mandzukic's goal was absolutely sublime, though.

One day this won't be news, but if this is what it is, it's incredibly brave – especially given they play for Lazio.

You wait 20 years for your team to even win a match at the U20 World Cup, and then they go on to win the damn thing...

An example of a player winning stuff in a U-team and then amounting to not much.

It's quite hit or miss, really.

I imagine it's harder to find players who were successful at under-age level and went on to great things, tbh.
Nigeria are the most successful nation at the U-17 World Cup, for example, but their senior team has never even managed to get past the second round of a World Cup

I don't think NK can get open enough nor throw enough money at this to even remotely make it happen.

North Korea's aggression would put quite a lot of nations off backing the idea, or lead nations to insist playing in the South only to an extent that North Korea only gets a couple of matches.

*looks at the list of teams*

I see the problem, NAC never amounts to anything. :p

Anyway, as Sweden decided that a win against the French would be swell, the Dutch now essentially need to win the four remaining matches to qualify for the WC. On the other hand, missing the WC keeps us on the course for winning the EC 2020.

Silver lining: If they did, we'd probably be significantly more likely to see a champion that wasn't from Europe or South America

Yeah, dictatorship football is so nice. Argentina 1978 :(

2002 SK/Japan. Fond memories of robber refs and guess what, the title went to South America.

Success at U20 level is definitely no indication of success at higher levels. Argentina won it in 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2007 and have achieved nothing internationally since the early 90s.

There was no World Cup in 2002.
There was some weird tournament somewhere in Asia, I heard. But no World Cup. Certainly not one involving Italy getting spectacularly shafted. Nope.

Yeah, nothing internationally except two Olympic golds and a silver, four 2nd place finishes in the Copa America, and a World Cup final.
