I don't recall seeing any evidence that mass surveillance actually made westerners, the west or anyone more secure from terrorism. France, for example, supposedly had surveillance programmes as strong as PRISM that continued long after we'd gotten bored of being angry over it, and that completely failed to pick up on the Paris attacks before they happened, or indeed either Brussels attack.

But think for every one that makes it through how many are stopped and never make it to the press, thankfully.

Not hearing about dozens of potential attacks and then getting one through the net is preferable to dozens of attacks.

And I'm not aware of any evidence that any of those "potential attacks" were stopped by mass surveillance, as opposed to existing powers, networks and measures that predate that.

For once, I wish one of these guns in mass shootings was a semiautomatic rifle, but with a full wood stock and no pistol grip or bayonet lug so people would understand that "gun looks scary" does not make a weapon more or less effective.

Note, this was not an evangelical that did this, this was a Muslim who's father said that his son got "angry" at the sight of two men kissing.

This is sick, this is regressive and this is the first time I've cried over a mass shooting. Being gay myself, I cannot even imagine the heartache that the victims and their family are going through. We need to put aside politics, put aside this gun control nonsense and show love and compassion in the face of trial.

What I find regressive is that certain people used the incident as an opportunity to imply Christianity was at fault instead of waiting for the evidence to reveal it was a Muslim.

Hostage situations are never good if true, but a gay club is a kind of strange target.

Statistically, a Christian in the U.S. may believe same-sex marriage shouldn't be legal. They aren't aiming to ban homosexuality like the majority of Muslims are. So no, it's not surprising that a violently homophobic religion such as Islam continuously ends up spawning hate crimes against LGBT people far more than any other religion can churn out such malice.
