The police giving a press briefing specifically said "a rifle," so I'd have to go with the AR-15 until further information reveals itself.

Okay, so I may have over-emphasized. But the damage remains, not in documents, but in American psyche. It caused a backlash against the IC for the conception of an overreaching intelligence community, causing them to be forced to backpedal, leaving space for threats to form that get missed in the vacuum because a small and very public leak made some people uncomfortable.

I don't recall seeing any evidence that mass surveillance actually made westerners, the west or anyone more secure from terrorism. France, for example, supposedly had surveillance programmes as strong as PRISM that continued long after we'd gotten bored of being angry over it, and that completely failed to pick up on the Paris attacks before they happened, or indeed either Brussels attack.

But think for every one that makes it through how many are stopped and never make it to the press, thankfully.

Not hearing about dozens of potential attacks and then getting one through the net is preferable to dozens of attacks.

Actually, according to the Orlando Police Chief John Mina, there was at least one armed police officer working at the club, and they engaged the culprit as the attack began.

"Officials said the killings were likely to be ideologically motivated, though there was no information that the gunman was associated with a particular group."

"It is believed that the suspect, who was a US citizen from the Florida town of Port St Lucie and was of Afghan descent, was not on a terrorism watch list, although he was being investigated for an unrelated criminal act."
