You raise a lot of interesting points.
The right to freedom of speech is absolute--you have that right. The only lawful purpose of governments are to be guarantors of our rights. Sadly, throughout history most have not--they have been frauds. The American Ideal is one such exception--encapsulated in our 1st amendment is freedom of though, word, and deeds in order to communicate that which is right, just, and true.

People on the other hand are either virtuous or they are vicious. Some would die to protect for others the rights that they cannot defend. Then there are those who would actively work to suppress or deny to others their rights. They are monsters who know nothing of truth, justice, and peace except as a means to an end--gaining a following by which to gain power. These are the types throughout history talk of justice (or whatever the demagogic passion of the times be) who when left unchecked end up murdering hundreds, thousands, if not 10s of millions of people.

It's always been hazy. I can't think of a time when there was ever truly free speech, only highs and lows.
For the sake of confusion, you can call me SJW

Your dose of Edgism #22
America just voted for a reality TV star.

What's sad is that was the better choice.

But, any right that is not explicitly given to the national government is left to either the states or the people. So I do, in fact, have the right to be a douchebag, if I so choose, provided I act within the law.

Try convincing your teacher/professor/boss that.

Point missed, once again.

You can be told by your teacher/professor/boss you're out of order and to shut up or leave. That's not violating your freedom of speech.

The government can't jail you for saying, "I think the US sucks." THAT would violate your freedom of speech.

Getting arrested for screaming "Let's all riot right now and murder all the niggers we see!" is not a violation of your freedom of speech either. Inciting a riot or a panic is not protected speech.
