Britain is far more similar to countries such as the United States culturally, politically, economically (or should be), than our neighbours in France or Italy. Likewise, the idea of a 'true democracy' is really just a myth- there is no such thing as a true democracy without the threat of anarchy, and therefore I believe both the UK & US have attained maximum democratic potential as we are.
I visit the U.S at least sixteen times a year, my parents much, much more. It is a brilliant country, with a brilliant people & a brilliant culture. Evidently you haven't been down the streets of New York, or Miami, or Atlanta, or Dallas!

I have heard this debate many times and wondered what you guys think. Personally as a British person I think Britain is better because we have a welfare state with free healthcare, and a larger history. Also we are speaking English.

No there are many british houses that have lasted for hundreds and hundreds of years. Many are simply kept going with support. I daresay prehaps the same could have been said for some Native American settlements (although I do acknowledge there are a few standing) if it was not for the poor treatment of such individuals.

No there are many british houses that have lasted for hundreds and hundreds of years. Many are simply kept going with support. Actually that is not necessarily correct, Britain has lower productivity than the U.S.

The USA took down Japan essentially single-handedly (nice job with Singapore, mates), kept the Germans from overrunning the Russians in the first place with the equipment and supplies we sent them, and then enabled the Russian counterattack to succeed by destroying their industry with our daytime bombing (which we did because the Brits were too scared to do so, and took the night bombing). No contest here.

So, Britain's welfare state being based off both American generosity, and America essentially paying for much of Britain's defense, helps your Britain-is-better cause how, exactly? If the U.S. drops off the face of the planet, Britain is in trouble, and their lovely welfare is as well-if Britain drops off the face of the planet, the U.S. says "meh." That should tell you something.

And if Britain had been defeated by the Germans prior to America getting off its isolationist arse, Germany would have secured western Europe and concentrated its forces against the soviets, leaving you to fight the Japanese and Germans alone. The only reason you could attack western Europe was using us as a Launchpad.
