I did a back ground check on the FPO. They seem like they are alright. Economically capitalist, socially liberal ( kind of ), nanny state, and anti-immigration. This doesn't really seem all that bad or loony

It does not matter. The president has no power.

But does not practice it. Besides dissolving the Parliament merely triggers new elections. It can be more harm than good for the president.

But that's pretty much the point, isn't it?
The actual offices that matter are the parliamentary ones.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Meh, the FPÖ will win the legislative elections, and while this is undoubtedly a loss for a party that was expected to win in the polls, it is still an impressive feat by a political party with no allies in a political system that is ultra-dependent on coalition building. The causes of the rise of the radical right will remain unaddressed as the elites breath a collective sigh of relief, whisper "never again!", and move on and forget this ever happened.

Expect the FPÖ to come back the next round (so the legislative elections in 2018), and pray that the deal with Turkey holds.

All in all, this is a bandaid when what you needed was surgery.
