A lot of the music I listen to actually is pretty edgy, now that I think about it.I used to have very particular taste in music, listening to pretty much nothing but common practice period classical music, 70s & 80s electronic music, & the softer sort of classical rock. After listening to Revolution 9 all the way through as a joke in the eight grade I became interested in the weird side of music. The way I approached listening to music changed at that point; I began to think of unpleasant forms of music as an acquired taste, sort of like spicy food; something. (I had a lot of free time at that point.)
In my first year of high school I suddenly got into modernist classical music, especially that of Bela Bartok. Although I don't listen to the later, more extreme modernist music, such as that of Stockhausen, Xenakis, &c. that often, I'm able to enjoy it whenever I do. (This sort of music is an acquired taste for me; it was pretty jarring at first, though it took me a few months at most to get used to it, & now I don't even bat an eye at it.) W/ my newfound openness to unpleasant music (still lot's of free time, & not many friends) I developed a tolerance for hard rock, & then metal (all of which I used to hate). King Crimson (hard rock w/ influence from modernist music) is still probably my favourite rock band.
Although I could genuinely enjoy the likes of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFOUBHJp3Ms, I still had a pretty elitist attitude towards rap & the more recent forms of electronic music, that all changed when I got into dubstep. It didn't take me long to discover that the more old school dubstep sounds almost nothing like the third-rate party mix music most often associated w/ the term, & from dubstep I got into similar forms of electronic music, such as jungle, grime, & footwork. Once I realized pretty much all electronic music made from the 80s on is derived form disco, I even started to appreciate that (once having been the quintessential "disco sucks" classic rock kid).
My religious awakening, culminating in my Baptism, had its effect as well. At that point I realized that having elitist views of music is one of the stupidest things possible, & came to grips w/ the fact that most people are not interested, nor ever will be interested, in the bizarre music I subject myself to (although I have to admit it would be pretty cool of you could regularly hear cars full of teenagers blasting some Stockhausen). I didn't listen to much religious music before, though now I'd honestly have to say it's my favorite form of music. I listen to all sorts of Christian music, including some of the earliest known hymns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFDfyihG6o0. I like some CCM, although I lot of it really doesn't appeal to me; religious music ought to stimulate the intellect. Also, just because something is enjoyable to listen to doesn't mean it's appropriate for corporate worship. Also, I have a soft spot for gospel music/ convention style music, such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaf42DWz0hE.
