You know, I really have to wonder what the thought process was here for the school district to think this is a good idea.

I don't believe this. There is no way that no one objected to this, and I do not believe that this is real.

edit: my god it's really true

I'm just a little too stunned at the moment.

Huh?
Because the webcam can capture anything happening in the room where the laptop is, district personnel could illicitly observe plenty more than a student's online activity, the lawsuit alleges.

I'm assuming the webcams were integrated into the laptops, so it would be pointing away from the screen. How would they be able to use the webcam itself to monitor the online activity in the first place?

So was the computer monitoring keystrokes, and online usage? Were the webcams controlled remotely? So bizarre. I can't imagine how something like this would even pass the fantasy stage.

That's awful. If that happend to me I'd go on a laptop smashing rampage.

Also kind of creepy that the school can reprimand you for "inappropriate behavior in your own home."

So, I guess if you jerk off in view of the camera the school can punish you. Regardless of being in your own home.

That's why you shouldn't be allowed in Best Buy.

Yeah, I can't imagine any justification for watching the students as they sit in front of the computer. At least using keystrokes or some kind of screen monitoring thing would have the flimsy excuse of trying to keep the students from misusing school property.

They can't.

This simply triggers so many privacy issues, it's beyond my ability to catalogue them all.

Okay, not ability, I just don't wanna.

Unless they've been supplying the students and their families with school-sponsored housing, no, the school can't.

Well, they did, allegedly. Just because its illegal doesn't mean you can't.

I imagine you'd have to prove that your...self gratification was not related to the content on the screen at the time. I'm sure there's restrictions on accessing pornographic content, and such video evidence could be indicative of that. But at the same time, you may be using other materials instead, with the camera catching you by accident so it's definitely a...

*sunglasses*

sticky situation.

The school was pretty sloppy about this. If they wanted to do something so utterly illegal and morally reprehensible, they should have only revealed it when they blackmailed students.
