9/11

Postby Lizardiar » Thu Jun 18, 2009 10:13 pm

Sorry if this has been posted before.

What were you doing on 9/11? What did you feel when you saw the towers collapse?

I felt sickened when I watched this video. Those people on the top floors never got a chance to get out.

This video is,

I'm pretty sure I was watching the news as it happened.

If you remember, that summer, all the news outlets were falling over themselves to report about shark attacks because there was nothing else happening to report on.

Well, I was in my Criminology class as the first tower was being hit and we were discussing this phenomenon, and how a huge news story would eventually erupt to throw all the shark attack nonsense off the pages.

Certainly one of the more surreal moments of my life.

I was working. And when I got home, tired and in need of relaxation, I was annoyed that my tvshows were all canceled. Before it sank in.

Sitting in a gym my Freshman year of high school listening to people talk about how great the clubs they ran were. Dean of Students came in, announced that a plane had hit the WTC. Not a big surprise at this point, as I'd already heard a snippet on the radio about it and figured it was some poor bastard in a Cessna. Got out of that assembly a bit early, went to class, where the teacher was just sitting there, not saying a thing, eyes glued to CNN on the TV.

Spent the rest of the day numb.

I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and we were outside at recese, and they kept us outside for like 2-3 hours. I thought it was cool until I got home, and it didn't sink in for a while.

At Camp Geiger, training new Marines the basics of of infantry tactics, when the call came to go on full alert, and alert any Marines who had family in the WTC/DC area. I didn't actually get to see the footage until later. We all knew that war was on the horizon, and training became very intense.

I have absolutely no memory of that particular day. Or much of anything past a few months. I've got a very, very poor memory.

You're a bit late. Or a bit early, whatever you prefer.

I, and a few other members, were out in Elko, Nevada for a recruiting trip. We had arrived the evening before and were staying at a hotel. I was the first one to get up and head out to the lobby for the free dounuts and coffee when I saw the second plane hit on the news. I woke everyone else up (My room mate, a former Marine had a few choice words to say once I convinced him I wasn't joking) and we headed out to the local high school, but didn't go through the event. Later on, given all flights were grounded, we couldn't fly back to the university like we planned so we had to drive through the middle of Nevada listening to talk radio and having to hear the US Senate sing God Bless America over and over again (Which, BTW, I think is against UN laws on human rights).

Pretty much it was a silent trip back.

Well.

If being serious, I've actually spent the first 5 minutes after I've been told about it convincing the other guy that it was just a movie.

Oh god, I remember for the whole semester after that, some teacher thought it was a good idea to make us sing "patriotic" songs every morning...

to this day I want to shoot that guy that wrote "God Bless the USA" in the face, >:(

We were all gathered round a computer at work watching the streamed video on the BBC news website. Everyone was quiet and really shocked.

My dad was driving me to school when he turned on the radio. They were reporting the collapse of the towers. I kinda remember what they said.

guy #1: The side of the building collapsed?
guy #2: No, the whole building.

At school, everyone was tlaking about it. Surprisingly, everyone knew that the terrorists were Middle-Eastern somehow. That or it was a lucky guess. The war that followed was pretty obvious. Everyone knew that there would be a war.

Keep in mind that I live in Nevada. 10AM in New York is 7AM over here.

Yep it was, and much better. I think having several historical events makes it both more interesting, and less likely to attract "dude, it was 8 years ago!" comments.

Here.

You could ask a Mod to merge this with that.

I saw it at a fast food joint and my first reaction was: "What an idiot!" by which I meant the pilot. That was before the second plane.

TBH: my reaction at that time was "shit happens!" and I went on with my daily life. It was at my piano lesson where my teacher informed me about the entire tragedy. At that time, there was still the theory that it was a revenge by a Japanese group for WWII and IMNSCO it seemed more plausible.
