That's part of the problem: Not knowing where to start. I don't think anybody in town even speaks Japanese (the one Japanese student graduated last semester and is now hours away).

I personally refer to Wiktionary all the time. GT is for quick checks though, not lengthy translations.

GT isn't good for translating sentences in general. Japanese grammar is totally different from English, including but not limited to particle usage, word order and such.

Yup. So whenever I see short words with no Japanese translations on Wiktionary or Wikipedia, I panic and turn to GT for a little bit of reference.

use weblio and goo and run the definitions through the translator if there's no J-E entries

I'd rather be able to read the original. That's why I still can't go to Weblio without cringing. ;-;

Let's see how much of that I can read... "Weblio". "は". "六百六十六の". "国語". "サイトです". Missed "辞書". Knew what "百科" meant, but does not know how to how to 話す.
