Language Thread

Postby Nordengrund » Wed Apr 13, 2016 3:45 pm

Hello NSG! I think it has been awhile since I made a thread here, so here is a new one!

What is your native language?

What languages are you learning/have learned? How well do you know the language(s)?

Are there any languages particularly like? Any you dislike?

---

English is my native language, but I am taking a Spanish class. I can read and write Spanish, but speaking it and listening to speakers is still a challenge since Spanish speakers talk to fast to me, but it is probably like that for every language.

I like most languages, but I do not have any I particularly like since I have not really studied any other foreign languages other than Spanish, Esperanto, and Japanese. As for languages I do not like, it would be English since it sounds boring to me and it is monotonous. It might be true that many people find their native language uninteresting.

There are hundreds of languages, but only ten options allowed for the poll, so I will do the best I can. Please suggest something if there is something that should be changed.

So what about you, NSG?

I'm on-again off-again with French and Japanese. Sometimes I try a little Turkish, but that's more because I hope to go on a trip to Istanbul in the (relative) near future. I can pick out short phrases or words in Japanese and I can read and understand spoken French if you speak slowly.

My goal is to learn the language of the people I came from!

Having been an adopted child from South-Korea ending up in the US I grew up speaking English though I'm working on my Korean so I can visit my country of origin

My native language is Netherlandish, my second fluent language is English and my third language is German (which I can speak conversationally and understand very decently).

Netherlandish is my favourite language, followed by German. I really like my own language, though this is highly likely entirely because it's the language I just so happened to have grown up with. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoy reading about the history of the Netherlandish language and regard as a serious ambition to become a "Neerlandicus" (Netherlandish language scientist). I am currently learning German because I am a big fan of the German language as well, mainly due to music and theatre. Luckily, we have easy access to German television (ARD/ZDF), so I occasionally watch the Tagesschau or ZDF Heute, beside general programming (though they could do with less Krimis, if you ask me >.>)

When I was a baby I only knew Korean, but my English ended up becoming much better because I was born and raised in the US. My Korean isn't that great, but I would love to improve it.

I'm trying to learn Japanese and French right now, but I'm not really trying at all with French. I'm also trying to learn Mandarin, but I've taken a break with that, I guess...

It's a little embarassing that I'm of Korean descendent yet I'm not exactly fluent in the Korean language. I am trying to learn Korean so that I won't act like an idiot to my relatives.

My native language is Haitian Creole and I'm learning Spanish. The Spanish language is kind of easy since some words are from French (Haitian Creole is a creole based on French, most words come from French).

I have such a limited vocabulary and I don't know how to speak as smoothly as people in Korea... :?

Whenever I speak with my relatives, my go to response most of the time is 네, 예, or 아니요. I know basic Korean but don't expect me to read all of Jingbirok without wondering what the hell I'm reading.

两个都可以。但是,很多中国人不会读繁体字,因为他们不再用繁体字了。

Personally, though, I prefer the traditional script. Mainly because its more fun to write.

My native language is Polish. I can also speak English. I was learning German for about 6 years in my life but I can't speak it very well. I'm really into all sort of European languages. I would like to learn some Nordic or Slavic one but Hungarian and Albanian sound also quite interesting. My idea for the next month is to start learning French, Italian or Spanish. I would like to get to know one of these Romance languages to have a basic for the others from this group. To sum up, I really can't decide which one is my favourite :D but of course, Polish will always be the only one.

Learn Italian. Granted I'm biased, but yea... Learn Italian. It's supposedly the most basic and easy to learn of the Romance/Latin languages.
