Family Guy is politically incorrect, but not in an humorous fashion. They can do whatever they like as far as I'm concerned.

Family guy didn't knock the fact that she had DS. Hell... they even had Chris fall for her. They just made fun of people that put their kids with problems on a pedestal for the world to goggle at and then expect only nice, clean comments about them.
This Debate is simply an exercise in Rhetoric. Truth is a fickle being with no intentions of showing itself today.

Truth is though, that just by discussing it we are doing exactly what Family Guy wants. They want controversy and attention.

Unless they get pulled off the air ... AGAIN ... Then screw it, because nothing will happen. Except maybe a few more haters will show up and annoy people a bit before realising nobody cares about Family Guy to begin with.

And who'd that be? I think it's a fucking hilarious show. And why would a show with such good ratings get pulled?

Well...It is Fox, them canceling a show is my primary means of discovering whether its good or not, :?

And I agree, it is pretty hilarious, not in a smart, thinking way, like South Park, but, in a more relaxing stupid way thats nice at 2 in the Morning, :lol2:

Yeah I know we all hate Palin and think she is a nut.
Is it not a little past even a comedy show to reference her child with Down's syndrome?

Do you have a link to the actual clip that is a problem? I'm bias to think it was the typical sick ableist, and possibly sexist stereotyping and hate but I'd rather see it first so I know what I'm commenting on.

pop ups so beware.

Just a really really stupid show. I did not laugh once. Got close with the bath buddies.

The whos on first would be too if it were not such an overplayed and famous skit. It actually was not as hateful as I expected.

Who would watch such boring stuff?

edit: thanks for the link by the way

Ask Joss Whedon he seems to be the main victim of the whole Fox TV show pulling thing. It happened to Family Guy once before.

Well you have to think to get the actual meanings of the jokes, such as that the DS show was making fun of Palin and feeling sorry for the kid. Most people don't get the irony or sarcasm, seeing as how those two types of humour require higher thinking skills. It's why so many wing nuts can't understand why people like Colbert when he allegedly has views opposite of theirs.

Me. It's only one of my most favourite shows ever, and one of the fucking funniest series of all time. It really makes lots of political points, but it requires a certain sense of humour .

Good point. You don't have to think hard to get all the toilet humour, sex jokes, double entendre or slapstick -- but for those of us who understand the rest, it's only that much better! South Park does require a bit more understanding of current events now that you mention it. I didn't fully understand the Dances with Smurfs episode until I saw Avatar. (Of course I got the political aspect, just not the cultural references.)

It got terrible around 2008. The last good one I remember was where Stewie and Brian and Mort traveled to Nazi Germany. The show fell apart after that in my own opinion. Of course, in that same episode was where a political badge featuring MCCAIN-PALIN was on a Nazi officers uniform, but I don't remember hearing anything about that... :eyebrow:

There were a few points in the episode that I'd say were "pushing the envelope" as far as dealing with Downs syndrome in a respectful manner. None of them involved the throwaway reference that Palin is focusing on. Her indignation over Famiy Guy would seem a little less feigned and self-serving if she'd taken on some of the demeaning DS gags and not just an incidental reference to her resume.

Still, for all the hyperbolic ad homenim shit she dishes out, and for one who doesn't really know how her own damn government, economics, or foreign policy works, she's got some nerve getting offended given how often she opens her yap hole.

I was inclined to say 'too far' mostly because I didn't really think it was that funny, it was just a throw out to me, this character has Down Syndrome, there's a public family with a Down Syndrome child...

But now that I think about it...what...what's the insult? I mean, it's barely a joke...none of the dating age Palins have Down Syndrome, the character wasn't named after one of them...was it that there is something inherent in governing Alaska that makes you have down syndrome children? There...I have to say it again, there barely even seems to be a joke there much less an insult. It's almost like someone used "That's what she said" after "Hey, could you get me a soda?"

So I say that Family Guy didn't go far enough, they didn't make the joke make sense.

As far as the portrayal of the Down Syndrome character, the 'offensive' portrayal is of them as incapable, deriving humor from their inability. Instead the show derived humor from an old relationship story trope of a kind of Dr. Jeckyl/Ms. Hyde sudden Shrew thing. In a way it was a progressive portrayal of a Down Syndrome character that they would end up just as much a jerk as anyone else.

Granted when you are in an under-represented group, every representation takes on greater significance, and one could argue that people with mental conditions get characterized as demanding, but I think that's a much more developed and arguable critique than 'their mean jerks' which is what we seem to be arguing about.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Palin being fake and self-serving? I find that hard to believe. Just look at how she savaged Limbaugh for his.... um... ah.

The joke in question wasn't at the expense of Palin's child, it was at Palin's expense - the fact that she's trying to make it about her child just shows what a truly hollow person she really is.

The last episode of Family Guy I saw made racial stereotype jokes about Asians, Jews, and Blacks...all in the span of about two minutes.

Palin ought to be glad it wasn't worse. :p

...I'm actually of the opinion that they're trying to get the show canceled. The blatantly offensive humor has gotten much more prevalent of late.
